We are God’s image bearers.

It is hard to believe that we are closing in on the middle of this year, the cold weather of the last few weeks are a good reminder that winter is fast approaching. One of the consistent messages in this first year of my time at Plenty Valley Christian College is that we all, all of the students, all of the families, all of the staff, are image bearers of God.

That is, in reading the earliest chapters of the Book of Genesis we learn that all humankind share the image of God; additionally, we all have a responsibility to care for the good world God has provided for us. While this is something we have in common, we are also aware that each of us is uniquely made. Each of us has certain gifts that we discover as we live and learn in community, gifts that we develop, gifts that help us understand who we are. Across school life, students are often reminded that while we all share much in common, each of us has a particular giftedness.

In recent weeks and in the weeks ahead, through the College programs these two messages will be heard and lived. This week, for example, on Monday, we had our Year 9/10 Café Culture Class Showcase, an event where students organised and provided lunch to around fifty guests. On Wednesday and Thursday, we held the respective Secondary and Primary College Winter Music Recitals in Eltham. On Friday, our Senior School mid-year exams begin, which are just another way for the student body to demonstrate their giftedness.

Additionally, many such events and learning opportunities are yet to occur this term. The term will conclude in a few weeks with Year 10 students either undertaking work experience or being part of the College’s Vanuatu Mission Awareness trip. While this is occurring, the Year 9 students will be participating in the Student Community Involvement Program (SCIP) which includes a visit to La Trobe University and learning activities in the CBD.

Of course, these are but examples of the rich educational opportunities that assist students in experiencing and learning about God’s world and developing their gifts. It is my hope and prayer that through their experiences here at Plenty Valley Christian College students appreciate their roles as image bearers, their own giftedness, and learn how their gifts can build up the communities they are part of.
