Rush News

Mr Scott Minogue, Pastoral Leader - Rush

As we approach the end of the first term of the year, I would like to congratulate the members of the Rush Rampage on the way that they have approached their schooling. In my years of doing this job, I would say that this is one of the smoothest starts that I have experienced my end. I just wanted to take a moment to highlight a few events that the Rush gents took part in this term.

Rush Leaders 2025

The 2025 Rush Captains have now completed two terms in their leadership roles (commencing in Term 4 last year). They have been a huge support to me and have worked positively with the boys in the House. While all Seniors take a leadership role in the House, I would like to take this opportunity to remind us of who is ‘captaining’ the various areas in Rush. Also, students are encouraged to speak to the Rush Captains if they have any questions relating to their leadership area.

Orientation Day - New Students and Year7

When thinking back to the start of the term and Orientation Day for the new students and Year 7s, I remember a lot of nervous faces putting on a smile when we took these photos. We have come a long way since then, and I would like to publicly welcome the new students and their families to Rush House. Already, many of the new students have made strong contributions to the House and the College, and I look forward to working alongside them in their journey at Marist. I would like to thank the 2025 Rush Leaders for their assistance in familiarising the Year 7s with high school, and the Year 13s - Dom Forbes (College Captain 2024) and Max Bathersby (Vice Captain– Academics 2024) for the two weeks they spent working with the newest Rush boys.

Year 7 Camp

On Wednesday to Friday in Week 3, Year 7 attended Camp at Marantha, Yandina, in the Sunshine Coast. I was joined by two Year 10 students – Aiden Honke and Matthew Terwin – and I will leave it to them to share their observations.

“Despite a long bus ride, the excitement was noticeable, with students eager yet nervous about the upcoming adventure. The first day kicked off with the Jacobs Ladder challenge, where students partnered up to climb a ladder while relying on their peers for support from below. This activity set the tone for an incredible first day. Day 2 began with many tired Year 7s, and a lot more tired teachers, but the energy quickly picked up as students participated in various activities, with the highlight being the Giant Swing. In this challenge, students were lifted high into the sky by their peers, then they pulled a cord to drop down and swing high over a large open space. This activity brought out the best in everyone, with constant encouragement as students cheered each other on and pushed through their fears. The camp was a fantastic opportunity for growth, fostering both individual and collective strength, and it was a pleasure to witness this.” Aiden Honke (Year 10).

“On the third day the boys had a much better sleep and were ready to go home, although some were sad that the experience was coming to an end. The day consisted of just two activities- a mid-ropes course and a long, muddy walk, which really tested the boys. Despite these activities, and a lot of rain, they still pushed through and challenged themselves. Year 7 camp was an incredible opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones and experience an exciting new environment. It offered a chance to develop teamwork and leadership skills. For us as Year 10s, we could see who was challenged and who was confident, and it was good to see everyone giving it go and growing new connections with their peers. Overall, Year 7 camp gave the students some valuable life skills, resilience, and confidence that will benefit them throughout their schooling journey, particularly in their first year of high school.” Matthew Terwin (Year 10).

Year 7 Induction - Badge Presentations

Upon returning form camp, we had an opportunity to ‘officially’ welcome the Year 7s to the House, and the Seniors of each Pastoral Group, presented students with a Rush badge.

Swimming Carnival

A massive thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the Swimming Carnival – Rush House placed first! We didn’t win for any individual year level, but due to the numbers who swam across the day with consistent effort, it resulted in an overall win. It was a prime example of participation getting us over the line. Well done to the Rush Rampage! The Rush House Sports captain, Lachlan Davidson, communicated the following to parents, staff and boys…

“I’m thrilled to share the results of today's swimming carnival. For the first time in quite a while, Rush House has won the Swimming Carnival! For those interested in the details, our Year 11s and 8s kicked things off strong with a solid 3rd place finish. The Year 10s and 7s then surged us into 1st place, and our Year 9s and 12s maintained that lead throughout the event. With this victory, we are now currently in 1st place in the House Cup—our highest ranking since I’ve been at the College.

Boys, your effort today was nothing short of outstanding. The level of participation was the best I’ve ever seen, and with only a few boys missing or injured, we truly came together as a House to clinch this win. Every race, every cheer, and every ounce of effort contributed to our success. I noticed that everyone gave it their all - even those who may not be the strongest swimmers stepped up to race, and your courage and participation did not go unnoticed. Thank you.

As a House, we had the largest turnout by far, which played a crucial role in our overall victory. This is a testament to what we can achieve when we work as a team, give our best, and support one another. It’s this spirit that we need to maintain as we strive to keep our lead in the House Cup.” Lachlan Davidson (Year 12) – Rush House Sports Captain

Rush House Mass

Thank you to the staff, parents and students who were able to attend the Rush House Mass. Community Mass is held each Wednesday morning in the Chapel, and twice a year, each House receives an invitation to attend. It was a nice opportunity to engage in Mass together as a community, and I look forward to seeing more of the Rush family in attendance when we receive the next invitation – I will email to let you know when that is.

Formal

On Saturday 1st March, Year 12 attended their formal at Brisbane City Hall. The Seniors looked amazing, and from my observations on the night, they were respectful to each other and their partners. The ‘smart’ look turned sweaty and a little disheveled once the dance floor started, but I think that was the sign of a good evening. This night was a reminder that the Year 12s are now starting to have final memorable moments as they participate in Senior-specific activities and events for the last time.

RACQ

Year 11 students had a presentation from RACQ about the unique risks and challenges that come with learning to drive. The interactive presentation explored the Fatal Five (distraction, drink driving, fatigue, speeding and seatbelts), with key tips and strategies for those on their L and P plates.

Assessment

Congratulations to the students who successfully completed NAPLAN this term, and for remaining flexible when the dates needed to move due to ex-cyclone Alfred. I understand that there are students still completing assessment, so good luck! With Exam Block and assessments needing to be pushed back this term, there might be some results that won’t be available until next term. When students do receive their grade and feedback, it will be important to engage with this, ask questions and set goals moving forward. Parent Teacher Interviews will also provide an opportunity to ask questions, but it will be important to remember that not all results may been finalised by this time (thanks Alfed!).

I hope that everyone has a chance to rest and recharge over the upcoming holiday break and Easter season. Stay safe and well, and I look forward to working with the Rush family again in Term Two. As always, please reach out at any time if I can be of assistance.

God bless

Scott Minogue
