Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon

With the covers away and the posts up we transition from summer sport to winter sport this week. Boys should by now have finalised their decisions and completed registrations, and preparing the equipment you need for the new season. Do your boots still fit? Do you need a mouthguard or shinpads? Does the Marist shirt still fit you? These are questions you should be asking yourself and solving before the return to school next term. From Steve Smith to Billy Slater, Ian Thorpe to Ash Barty, our own John Eales to Tim Cahill, the one set of characteristics they all had in common as athletes is their preparation was meticulous, attention to detail perfect and their organisation skills exemplary. We cannot all play like these champions, but we can take our cues from them by making sure our organisation, preparation and attention to detail is at our highest level, allowing us to all play at our sport at our optimal level.

All players must be registered to play. I appreciate this a relatively new process for us, but it is very important. It is vital to receive information for the relevant sport season that players are registered, and parents are accessing the Orbit app.

This week our basketball team are in Melbourne attending the Marist Basketball Carnival, a national competition across the Marist family of schools. There are 23 boys teams taking part this year. Good luck to our team, led by head coach Mr. James Lymer and basketball coordinator Mr. John Lambourne.

Good luck to our rugby teams from under 12s and 1sts and 2nds travelling to northern NSW for various camps and competitions, and our 1st XI football who have a competition on the Gold Coast and football teams involved in various trial matches over the holiday period. I am sure you will all represent the college with pride and determination. Thank you to Mr Graham and Mr Whitlock for your oversight and organisation of these important school experiences and also to all the coaches and managers involved in sporting activities over the holidays.

Our rugby teams have completed their prepare to play sessions and trials are continuing, and football A teams are nearly sorted with trials continuing. The ongoing wet weather, including the cancellation of our internal trials on the weekend will affect the trials process. We understand boys want to know what team they are playing in but appreciate everyone’s patience as we deal with significant lost trial time over the last week. We may need to use right up to the trial round against Villanova as a part of the trials process. Cross country continues to work hard in preparation for the AIC championships next term and our chess teams have had training up and running for a number of weeks now.

The rugby, football, chess and cross-country handbooks are available in the Orbit app along with lots of key information about the season ahead under the co-curricular tab. The app is where we publish our key documents, like the handbooks, training times, changes and cancellations and fixture draws.

Have a great holiday, relax, recharge, keep fit and come back raring to go for the winter sports.

Marist Basketball Carnival 2025 - Marcellin College, Bulleen

Mr James Lymer – 1st V Coach

The basketball season for 2025 is well underway. As new Head Coach and the Marist Basketball Carnival in Melbourne around the corner, I looked forward to getting started on court. After two trial sessions in Week 4, a squad of 16 was selected. Over the next five weeks, training focused on building great habits through player development and strengthening team chemistry.

Beyond results, the carnival provides a fantastic opportunity to connect with other Marist schools across Australia. Our focus remains on growing as a group, playing the right way and upholding our core principles: Mentality, Competitiveness, and Accountability (MCA). The lessons learned will be invaluable as we prepare for a successful AIC and CBSQ campaign in Term 3.

Thank you again to Mr Lambourne for your tireless efforts making this event possible and to Old Boy and Assistant Coach, James O’Hara for his contributions already with team.

Congratulations and best of luck to the following students selected to represent the College:

  • Makenzie Bowen
  • Jacob Cook

Winter Training

As Term 1 concludes, we are pleased to confirm that our swimming program will continue throughout Term 2 and Term 3. This is a great opportunity for swimmers to transition into our squad program, with training in comfortably heated water (27.5–29.0°C).

Our squad training caters to all abilities, whether for fitness or competitive swimming. Maintaining training during winter significantly enhances performance, setting our swimmers up for success when the AIC Season Competition resume in Term 1, 2026.

Rugby Union Training and Trials – Week 9 and 10

Unfortunately, our rugby trials were washed out, which was hugely disappointing given the effort from our students in completing the Rugby Ready Program, attending training sessions, and the hard work of our staff in organising trial teams. However, with the fields unsafe and unplayable, we were presented with no other option.

We appreciate everyone’s commitment and understand the frustration, but we remain focused on maximising preparation for the season ahead. Please stay tuned for further communications, as we will attempt to hold trial games during training sessions in Week 10 to ensure players have an opportunity to be assessed.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. We look forward to getting back on the field soon!
