News from the 3/4 Community...

3/4 Community has been busy Learning!

In Literacy, the students began the term exploring the use of descriptive language, rhyme and the rhythm of words in our Poetry unit, which the students thoroughly enjoyed.

The students connected with our sister school in Indonesia via Zoom. St Joseph’s has worked in partnership with Hani Nusantari for over 12 years. Hani is a Marine Biologist who has won numerous international awards through her work on mangroves, the marine environment and education and cultural exchange. Together with Hani in Lombok and St Joseph’s, we work together to continually develop “The Sea Is Our Best Friend” (SIOBF) project.

The program is not only a marine environmental program which fosters responsibility towards the sea through interactive learning and hands-on experiences, it develops international friendships and cross-cultural connections for the students.

As well as being involved in mangrove rejuvenation activities, St Joseph’s has also included a Kinder Mentor program which involves our year 4 students introducing kinder students to Woolley’s Beach and undertaking science/sustainability activities at our school or their facility.

In Mathematics, the students have been busy completing many hands-on activities during our sessions in Measurement. Students have been investigating the relationship between millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres and which unit is most suited to measure different objects. The students have been using both scaled and informal units for measuring and have been practising estimating lengths.

Family Fun Friday saw the students become the teachers as they introduced their families to our Daily Review maths program. Families participated, following the whiteboard routine for the program and completing activities.

We have an exciting excursion planned for Tuesday where we will be traveling to Phillip Island to visit the SeaGen aquaculture facility. SeaGen is a multi-species marine hatchery. As part of our SIOBF project, the students have constructed an artificial oyster reef which is thriving. We are visiting SeaGen to see the methods they use to grow their oysters and how they use research and technology.
