STEM

Year 5/6
The Grade 5/6 students are continuing to enjoy tinkering with different circuits in our STEM electronics unit. Their favourite activity so far has been making steel wool fuses and then blowing the fuses with a short circuit. It’s amazing how much excitement a little spark and charred steel wool can create!
The students have also enjoyed making skill testers (that demonstrate open and closed circuits) ‘art bots’ (that use vibration to create a drawing effect) and electromagnets that can create enough magnetic force to pick up over 40 steel paper clips!
Year 3/4
This term, the Grade 3/4 students are exploring “Monuments Around the World”. Every week, we focus on a different man-made monument, investigating the materials used in its construction and the significance of the monument to its original creators, and populations today. Over the last few weeks we have visited some very famous tombs such as The Pyramids of Giza and the Taj Mahal. The students have also made a ‘to scale’ model (in terms of height NOT LENGTH!) of the Great Wall of China, using a Teddy figurine to represent an ‘average sized person’ standing next to the wall. We have also explored structural features such as columns and domes, which increase the strength of a structure, contribute to its longevity, and also look really cool. I am always amazed at how our BSPS Lego masters are able to push the boundaries of the ‘brick’ to create amazing architectural structures.
