Making Maths Fun at Home!
Maths isn’t just for the classroom—it’s everywhere! Helping children see maths in everyday activities boosts their confidence and deepens their understanding. Simple, fun activities at home can make a big difference in developing problem-solving and number sense.
Maths Game: Roll and Build
This game is perfect for practising addition, multiplication, and strategic thinking.
How to Play:
- Each player takes turns rolling two dice.
- Younger children can add the two numbers together, while older children can multiply them.
- The total number determines how many blocks (LEGO, building blocks, or even drawn squares) they can use to build a structure.
- Continue playing for a set time or until a tower reaches a certain height.
The tallest or most creative structure wins!
This game encourages quick mental maths and creativity while making learning fun.
Maths at Home Tip: Shopping with Numbers
A simple trip to the grocery store is full of maths opportunities! Challenge your child to estimate the total cost before reaching the checkout, compare prices to find the best deal, or count the correct change. Older children can work out the cost per item in bulk purchases or calculate discounts. These real-world applications make maths practical and relevant.
Engaging with maths daily helps build strong problem-solving skills and a love for learning. Try these ideas and make maths an exciting part of your home!
S.T.E.M. Club
This week Our STEM leaders - Daniel, Lincoln and Evan (with special guests Kimmy and Kora) introduced Bee-Bots to the Prep to 2s. Bee-Bots are small, programmable floor robots designed for young children to learn coding, sequencing, and problem-solving through simple button commands. They move forward, backward, turn left or right, and can follow a sequence of instructions to navigate a grid or complete challenges. A lot of fun was had by all!
