What's happening at OSHC?

The children discuss and suggest activities from events listed in the Culture Calendar.  Each week we have a different focus on the different nations. We love finding out about different cultures.

The holiday program is attached to this newsletter.   Please book now so we can arrange resources and staffing.  The children discuss and suggest activities from events listed in the Culture Calendar.   The drawing/colouring/puzzle themes were cats for weeks one and two and Among Us/Mario/Minecraft/Minions for weeks three to five.  The theme will be fictional characters for the remainder of term one.   The children have communication books that also contain their art work.   

 

In Week 2 the nations explored were Grenada: Caribbean, underwater sculpture cricket, cane, dove; New Zealand:  Oceania, hangi, kiwi haka pavlova, rugby mountains, volcanoes earthquakes, islands, netball, silver fern; and Sri Lanka: South Asia: jackfruit, rice, cricket, surfing, lily, elephant.  The United Nations and World days were cancer, human fraternity, pizza and rose. The indigenous art Djaara lights are available from February until mid-year.  The local events are the Sunset Safari at the Werribee Zoo and Sustainable Living Festival. Iran:     Western Asia, Arabian Nights, lion, heritage, history; Japan:  Asia, anime, origami, sushi, Pokémon; Lithuania: Baltic, potatoes, stork, paper and straw art, church spires, castles, basketball, Baroque; Serbia: Balkans, cheese, raspberries, WW1, eagle, carpets, pottery, landlocked, first vampire, oak, wolf; and Vatican City: Rome, Basilica, Easter lily were the nations for week three.   The United Nations and World days were radio, random acts of kindness, Valentines Day and women in science.   It was also National Apology Day. The were various lantern festivals for Lunar New Year.  In week four the nations were Gambia: West Africa, citrus, sabar, orchid, cricket, palm, hyena and Kosovo: Balkans, grapes, raspberries, jewellery, basketball, filigree, eagle, beech. The United Nations and World days were Love Your Pet. Mother Language, Scouts, Social Justice and Thinking.   The local events were the Ashburton Festival and Melbourne Art Fair.   Brunei: South East Asia, cherry, Sultan, oil, hot, Omar Ali Mosque, kris, silverwork, weaving; Dominican Republic: Caribbean, rice, beaches, forests, gothic cathedral; Estonia: Baltic, wolf, knitting, berries, blood sausage, oak, folk dancing, forests, basketball, temperate; Kuwait: West Asia. dates, desert, falcon, oil, skyscrapers, fidjeri; and Wales: United Kingdom, mountains, rainy, King Arthur, daffodil, Dr Who, dragon, welsh rarebit were the nations for week five.  The United Nations and World days were Cleanup Australia, Clean Up Schools, Complements, Fairystory, Polar bear and Science.  The local event was the Glenferrie Festival and it was the beginning of Ramadan. 

We also had fun with basketball, Barbie Dolls, bases, bookmaking, capture the flag, cars, cricket, daisy connectors, dinosaurs, doll’s house, dodgeball, dominoes, drawing, dressups, Duplo, Exploding Kittens, figurines, food roleplay, footy, fuse beads, gang up tiggy, Genius Squares, gymnastics, Happy Dinosaurs, Hatchimals, hide and seek, hockey, Jack in the pack, Jenga, jewellery making, Kanoodle, Lego, loom bands, Mastermind, office, reading, Rubik’s puzzles, sandpit, shopping, Shopkins, Skyjo, table soccer, tangrams, tennis, tracing, True or False, Uno, 123 hide and seek, 123 lava and 40/40 home.

 

Week six began with a discussion of Ash Wednesday and what the children were giving up for Lent.  We had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.  The nations were Bulgaria: Balkans: lion, rose, mountains and Ghana: West Africa: plateaus, Lake Volta, tropical, eagle, lily kente cloth, cocoa. The United Nations or world days were Be Heard, Book, Cat Rescue, Engineering, Sportsmanship, Wildlife and Women. It was also Sea Week and March is Disabilities Awareness month.  We also had fun with bases, basketball, cars, Chess, Cubeez, Exploding Kittens, Farmer Sam, footy, Hatchimals, hockey. jigsaw puzzles, lava monster, Morabaraba, Muffin Time, races, Shopkins, soccer and Squid Game. The nations for week seven was Mauritius: Indian ocean island, beaches, dodo bird, lagoons, reefs, forests. The United Nations or world days were: Get Over It, Girl Scouts, Jewel, Pi, Racial Discrimination Elimination, Rivers and Women’s Equal Pay. It was also Cultural Diversity Week.  The local events were Comic and Toy Fair, Grand Prix, Herb and Chili festival, Sunfest and Moomba festival and parade for the Labour Day long weekend.  We also had fun with cops and robbers, Cubeez, dressups, Genius Square, hula hoops, jelly fish, jigsaw puzzles, last to leave, masks, Muffin Time, obstacle courses, reading, shuriken, shark, Skyjo and tennis. 

 

Aruba (South American island, dry, reefs, cacti, free trade), Ireland (North Atlantic, Emerald Isle, shamrock medieval castles), Namibia (South Western Africa, Kalahari Desert) and Tunisia (North Africa, couscous, jewellery nuba, camel, jasmine) were the nations for week eight. The United Nations or world days were: Forests, Happiness, Harmony, Meteorological and St Patrick’s Day. We talked about autumn equinox and the position of the Earth and sun.  The children discussed Close the Gap for First Nation children.  We also had fun with basketball, cricket, dressups, Exploding Kittens, Genius Square, Happy Dinosaurs, gymnastics, hula hoops, long jump, masks, Muffin Time, perfumes, races, sandpit, Skyjo, soccer, stencils, tennis and witches.   

 

In the last week of Term 1 we are talking about Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday.  We also discussed Ramadan and Eid.  The nations were Cyprus (Mediterranean, minerals, tourism, shipping, mouflon cyclamen, golden oak), Senegal (West Africa, rice, fish, lion, parks, reserves, sanctuary, savanna, tropical, arts), Syria (West Asia, ibis, early civilisation, bear, oldest library, Aramaic, first alphabet, music) and Zimbabwe (South Africa, medieval stone ruins, cricket, antelope, lily).  The United Nations or world days were: Autism Awareness, Conscience, Creativity and Innovation, Earth, Health, Human Flight, Mine Awareness, and Parks. The local event was the Plant Fair and Garden Expo.   We also had/or will have fun with Barbie dolls, bases, basketball, cricket, dressups, figurines, flowers, Footy Feud, fuse beads, Genius Square, Huggy Wuggy, hula hoops, jigsaw puzzles, loom bands, morabaraba, Shopkins, shopping, stencils and table soccer.
