Level 5

Holidays are nearly here!!! What an incredible term full of fun and learning we have had!!

You should be so proud of your kids! We are!

Celebrations from the week

Harmony Day was a beautiful celebration of diversity, different cultures and inclusion. We were lucky enough to be entertained by some incredible indigenous music and learn about the first nation's people of Australia.

We also combined some higher and lower grades to take part in different multi-cultural activities.

Our 'Aim High' assembly show cased our wonderful choir members, JSC representatives and award winners. It was incredible to see all our Level 5 students aiming high and showing a growth mindset towards their learning.

In Life Education, students took part in the sessions focusing of puberty and changes. This valuable program is designed to equip students with essential life skills and deepen their understanding of their connections to others and the world around them. Every student was mature and respectful when learning about the way our bodies change.

Literacy

In Reading, we have now shifted our focus to persuasive advertisements and the techniques used to sell products. We have also been setting new goals for ourselves to strive for in Term 2.

In Writing, we have been looking at excellent examples of persuasive writing with a focus on introductions such as:

Title: Should children have mobile phones in school?

Introduction: Mobile phones have NO place in schools. What good reason is there for children to bring an object capable of so much disruption and distraction to school? Students would spend time on their phones instead of doing their schoolwork, they would lose their ability to socially interact and it would show a lack of respect to teachers and peers. Their academic progress would plummet and their futures would be put at risk. Is that what you really want???

In this piece we can identify rhetorical questions, exaggeration, emotive language, and personal pronouns. These are all powerful tools for persuading a reader to believe in our point of view.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, we have been exploring the connection between fractions, decimals and percentages. We have been delving further into equivalent fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. From there we will be looking at like and unlike fractions and will be adding and subtracting them. Lowest common denominators are proving to be an area that we need to spend time explaining, revisiting and exploring. It has been powerful cutting up lunchbox items and discussing real life fractions and when we would need to use them.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic is 'Identity' as we look at the key figures in the Federation of Australia. Students will be sharing their research in their own personalised way and conducting a gallery walk through the classroom to learn from each other.

In our Respectful Relationships program, we are focusing on emotional literacy, with our Friendology lessons aimed at showing forgiveness. If a friendship fire arises, we confront the issue, talk it out with an emphasis on forgiving and forgetting.

Homework

Students are required to:

  • Read every night and document it in their journals
  • Complete a spelling activity
  • Work on a mental maths sheet
