Aidan Weichard ‘Leaves of Life’

The Grade 1 and 2 students learnt about Gippsland based artist Aidan Weichard whose focuses on native flora and fauna, with a bold, vibrant and emotionally charge style. The students studied his ‘Leaves of Life’ series, then drew their hanging gum leaves with black permacolour pencil and coloured with paint pens.

The Grade 3 and 4 students were learning about Julie Ryder who is a mixed media artist based in Jerrabomberra NSW. Whilst studying for her Education Degree Julie was a floral designer, which is evidenced in her beautiful artworks of flowers in meadows. Taking inspiration from her wild meadow flowers, the students painted a background with acrylic paint and used round lids to stamp the flowers. Smaller circles were created with paint slicks and stems and blooming reeds were drawn with paint pens. The final piece de resistance is the butterflies that were drawn onto thin acetate and glued onto the flowers to give a 3D effect.

For the final project of the term, the grade 5 and 6 students learnt about iconic artist Ken Done. Due to his original style, Ken Done has been one of the most famous artists to come from Australia. His works quintessentially captures the Australian landscape with a playful and nostalgic approach and inspired by his postcard series of Sydney, the students created their own postcards. Using photos of Melbourne and Sydney for reference, they drew their pictures with permanent marker and painted them with bright liquid water colours. These postcards are truly outstanding small pieces of art, our Australian cities have been represented so wonderfully, if ever the postcard companies need some new inspiration, they know where to look!
