Student Leaders 2025

Introducing our School Captains Holly and Mitchell

In Term 1, the Senior Student Leadership team has had weekly meetings to collaborate on how to continue enhancing Blackburn High School’s awesome culture both in and out of the classroom. Taking on student feedback and acknowledging areas for improvement, we have identified three key areas to prioritise this year in order to maximise student engagement at school.

With the whole student cohort’s help and creativity, we will focus on reinforcing the effectiveness of the Mentor Group Program, House Points System, and Subject and Career Pathways

These avenues will guide student-led initiatives throughout the year with the clear aim of establishing increased student agency in and around our school environment. In addition to encouraging every student to be involved with these exciting changes (come and chat to one of the student leaders if you have any ideas or questions!), our team continues to work closely with the new House Ambassadors to prioritise transparency and creativity with all year levels and on all new action plans.

As this busy, busy, busy and fun Term 1 ends, the Senior Student Leadership team are excited to transform our goals for the rest of the year into clear actions after the Easter holidays!

Have a relaxing break everyone 😊

Dunlop:

It was great to see people participating in the house swimming carnival, and in house performing arts! (Thanks for the win!)

It was good to have everyone together for the House assembly and to get the chance to introduce our House Ambassadors! We look forward to having foodbank sponsor our new Breakfast Club initiative! Which will start next term, a chance for every student to enjoy a free breakfast on Wednesdays!

Now as the Dunlop House Captains I feel like we can't stress this enough, even though the three major house point earning events are over there are still ways to earn your house some HOUSE POINTS!

Such as, our cleanest Locker Bay initiative, Citizenship and Respect awards rewarding brilliant behaviour in class, Mentor Competitions and games, School Kahoots! (played in mentor).

We look forward to having Dunlop come out on Top! We hope you all enjoy the chance to relax over the holidays

Melba:

We appreciate everyone's involvement in this Term's events, and can't wait to see Melba's achievements at the Athletics Carnival. We encourage everyone to continue upholding the School Values within all areas of our school, which will give students the opportunity to earn House Points.

At the Melba and Hollows assembly, we were thrilled to announce our House Ambassadors for 2025, and look forward to closely working with them.

We can't wait for what next term has to bring for Melba!

It’s been a busy start to the year – the Swimming Carnival, House Performing Arts, and the Freeman Fundraiser.

So great to see everybody’s amazing contributions to these events, we couldn’t be prouder of you.

Your hard work is being recognised in the form of house points, with us currently sitting 'first place' and we are well in the race to win it at the end of the year.

Keep up the hard work and enthusiasm, the sky’s the limit!

Sport:

We were excited to see great energy and competitive spirit in our annual Swimming Carnival and Athletics events this term. Into Term 2, we hope to get the school involved in our Winter interschool sports, cross country, and continuation of the whole school footy tipping competition!

Go Blackburn!

Music:

It was a very exciting term for the music program! There were many collaborations between Balwyn High School, Eltham High School, and the Grainger Wind Symphony. It has been amazing to see the dedication and preparation for the upcoming New York trip (Essentially Ellington) and Generations in Jazz.

We have had the honour to work with the great musicians, Pharez Witted, Andrew Mott, and Dan Quigley this past week who have provided us with great spirit and knowledge. As a music program, we have a very exciting future ahead of us!

International:

Term 1 has been filled with numerous remarkable events, making it a busy yet fulfilling period. As a tradition, the International Student Program hosted a welcome lunch for both returning and new students to kick off the new school year at Blackburn High School.

During this gathering, the school leadership and wellbeing teams were introduced to all international students.

Towards the end of the term, VCE students were invited to a Career and Pathway Seminar designed to inform and educate senior students about future pathway selection. With an increasing in number of students, we see growth in both the size and talent of the International Student cohort.

Looking ahead, we anticipate a Cultural Diversity Day in Term 2 to promote inclusion within our school community.
