Term 4 STEM
We've finished off 2025 with a busy term of learning in STEM. Here are some examples of what we've been up to - I wish I had taken more photos!
Foundation
Foundation students have been learning about water - how we use it, where it's from and how it behaves. Students have been able to participate in guided investigations, learning new vocabulary and physics concepts such as floating, water displacement, and absorption through texts and experiences.
Year 1 & 2
Students have been learning about basic needs for survival of all living things (water, shelter, air, & food). This has resulted in students learning about where food and fibre come from. They designed a farm that would support all of these needs, and had the opportunity to model it in Minecraft Education.
Along the way, students practiced their design skills by building a model shelter to keep a small group of friends safe and dry.
Year 3 & 4
Students learned about temperature and thermal energy transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) and were set a task to design an esky to keep 1 ice cube from melting within a lesson. They were given insulating and conductive materials to choose from. The designs varied greatly, and there were groups whose ice cube shrank by only 1mm - well done!
I was very impressed by the work that went into this design task, and how enthusiastic the students were to put their new knowledge to the test.
Year 5 & 6
Students got to experiment with circuits - they investigated materials that conducted electricity, and learned how to represent electrical components as diagrams.
Happy holidays to the Wimba community!
