Grade 2 News

As the year draws to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate a wonderful year of learning in Grade 2 at Wimba Primary School. Our students have made fantastic progress across all areas of their learning, and we are so proud of the way they have grown in confidence, independence and collaboration.
Learning and Growth
This year, there was a strong focus on English and Mathematics, with students exposed to a wide range of skills and concepts that have supported their development as confident learners.
In English, students worked hard to strengthen their reading, writing and language skills. They explored different sentence types, learned to identify and use common and proper nouns, and practised editing sentences. Students developed their writing using sentence stems such as because, but and so, and participated in sentence expansion activities to add detail and meaning to their writing.
Students learned to identify and define adjectives and adverbs, and practised expanding simple sentences by using adjectives to modify nouns. There was also a strong focus on phonics, including letter sounds, graphemes and morphology, helping students understand how words are spelled and structured. Throughout the year, students worked hard to improve their handwriting skills and were also introduced to basic typing skills, supporting their growing independence as writers.
In Mathematics, students developed a strong understanding of number and problem solving. They worked with numbers to 1000, compared numbers, and practised addition and subtraction, including adding to three-digit numbers with regrouping and subtracting using place value. Students also solved worded problems using two-digit numbers.
Students explored a wide range of mathematical concepts, including:
- 2D shapes
- Map reading and street maps
- Length, measuring and drawing line segments and curves in centimetres
- Multiplication, through equal groups and multiplication facts within 40
- Division, focusing on sharing, grouping and solving word problems
- Money
- Fractions
- Calendar and time
- Graphs
- Turns and area
These learning experiences helped students build strong foundational skills and confidence in applying mathematics to real-world situations.
Knowledge and Inquiry Learning
Across the year, students engaged in Knowledge units that sparked curiosity and discussion. Topics included cycles in nature, the geography of Australia, Uluru, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, human cells and digestion, and the culture of Japan.
In Literacy, students enjoyed a range of rich texts, including How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth, ANZAC Puppy, The Gruffalo, The Truck Cat, Jetty Jumping, and Go Go and the Silver Shoes, helping to foster a love of reading and storytelling.
Excursions and Special Experiences
Grade 2 students participated in many exciting hands-on experiences throughout the year.
Highlights included our SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium excursion, our STEM excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens, and a memorable visit to ACMI, where students became actors in a fairy tale and explored storytelling through performance.
Our week-long swimming program was a wonderful opportunity for students to build confidence, resilience and water safety skills. The Colour Run was another standout event, bringing joy, colour and community spirit to our school.
Building Connections and Community
Over the course of the year, our Grade 2 students have shown wonderful growth in the way they work and learn together. They have demonstrated empathy, perseverance and cooperation, forming positive friendships and consistently demonstrating the values of “The Wimba Way.” Watching their confidence, independence and sense of belonging develop has been a true highlight.
