Grade 1 News

Dear Families,

As we reach the end of a wonderful year together, we wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you for all your support, encouragement, and partnership throughout 2025. Your children have worked so hard, shown so much growth, and brought endless joy and energy into our classroom. It has truly been a privilege to teach them.

We wish all our families a happy, safe, and sunshine-filled summer break, and we hope the children enjoy a well-deserved rest. We also send our warmest wishes for the new year ahead as they get ready to take on Grade 2!

What We’ve Been Learning

English

Over the past few weeks, students have been exploring the different ways the /s/ sound can be made in words. They have discovered how sc, and ss can all create the same sound, and they have enjoyed sorting, reading, and spelling words using their new knowledge.

Core Knowledge / Literature

We have loved diving into the beautiful story Mr. Wintergarten. Students have been practising how to describe characters using inside (personality) and outside (appearance) traits, and have had thoughtful discussions about kindness, misconceptions, and bravery.

Mathematics

We have wrapped up our unit on identifying Australian money and adding different combinations of coins to make an amount. Students impressed us with their developing confidence! We are now revisiting place value to ensure they are fresh, fluent, and ready for the larger numbers they will encounter in Grade 2.

Home Readers

We are currently missing a significant number of take-home readers. We kindly ask families to please have another look around the house so next year’s students can enjoy the same resources your children have been lucky enough to use. Readers found over the holidays can absolutely be returned next year.

Summer Homework Ideas

To help students maintain their learning over the break, here are a few simple activities:

  • Reading regularly to keep fluency strong
  • Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s
  • Practising sharing items equally or making equal groups (great for snacks or toys!)

Reminders

  • Step Up Day is on Tuesday 16th December. Students will meet their 2026 class and teacher. It is important they attend to support a smooth transition.
  • Friday 19th December - End of year assembly 9am
  • The last day of school is Friday 19th December. Students finish early and will need to be collected at 1:00pm.

Thank you once again for your support this year. We are so proud of everything the children have achieved and look forward to hearing about their adventures in Grade 2.

Warmest wishes,

Miss Kernick, Mr Pejic, Ms O'Reilly, Ms Clancy, Ms McColl
