Year 5

In English, students will combine their learning from both classroom Inquiry and English units. Drawing upon Science Inquiry and research skills, they will conduct investigations into how flora and fauna can best thrive in our local communities. Students will deepen their understanding of persuasive techniques to generate a message for their target audience. This will be conducted using a range of Speaking and Listening, Reading analysis, Writing, and Digital Media elements.
In Mathematics, learners will investigate open-ended Fermi Problems, such as ‘How many breaths do I take in a day?’ They will focus on justifying and communicating their solutions clearly. Additionally, students will apply and extend their knowledge of angles and location to create and investigate patterns called ‘Spirolaterals,’ created by drawing and programming robots. As they create increasingly complex shapes, they will discover patterns to find general rules.
In Aviation, students will complete their balsa wood aircraft models before finally having the chance to fly them. After observing the flight behaviour of the plane and gathering data, learners will try to find ways to improve their initial model – taking inspiration both from historical airplane designs and their own research into the subject. Once they have done so, they will modify their plane further to increase its performance in the sky, seeing just how far they can push their aircraft.
In Virtual Design, students are in for a unique and in-depth experience that covers multiple schools of the discipline. They will learn about the principles and elements of fashion design. This exploration will lead into a hands-on project where students will design a series of outfits for the Met Gala, inspired by the theme ‘The Asian Century.’ The second half of the term will offer a chance to explore architectural styles, with the 20th century Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernist and Bauhaus movements all being taught and analysed.
In Multimedia, students this term will continue to explore the fundamentals of filmmaking. They will then analyse the genre of silent films and how to effectively tell stories and convey emotions through gestures and actions, rather than via dialogue. Films in this medium, both old and new, will be analysed and students will then collaborate to create their very own silent films in groups.
The Netball Sports Innovation will give Year 5 and 6 students the opportunity to build on their skills and deepen their understanding of the game. Throughout the program, students will take part in a variety of engaging drills, challenges, and game-based activities to strengthen their passing, catching, footwork, shooting, and defensive techniques. They will also begin to explore tactical elements such as moving into space, creating opportunities, and reading the play. The program will emphasise teamwork and fair play, with students encouraged to communicate positively, support their teammates, and show respect for everyone involved.
In Languages Innovation class, students will continue to embark on an exciting journey into the world of Chinese folk tales and shadow puppetry, combining history, creativity, and performance. Through engaging storytelling, they will explore the cultural significance of traditional stories such as Nüwa Patching the Sky, Hou Yi Shooting the Sun, the legend of Nezha, and the 12 Zodiac Animals. Working collaboratively, students will research, design, and create their own shadow puppets, developing an appreciation for this ancient art form. They will showcase their learning through group performances, bringing their stories to life while demonstrating their creativity and storytelling skills, and celebrating the rich heritage of Chinese folk traditions.
In Art Innovation our Year 5 students are exploring how art can be created for a purpose. As part of our unit, students are researching ideas, gathering inspiration, and conducting simple interviews to understand what their audience would enjoy. They are then designing and creating their own artworks, with the goal of producing pieces that could be sold at a school fundraiser. Students will be developing important skills in research, design thinking, and creative decision-making, while also learning how to consider an audience when making artistic choices. We look forward to seeing their finished artworks and celebrating their creativity!
