Council Corner

It is an honour to serve as President of the School Council for 2026 and to pen this message.

The new School Council met for the first time on March 24 and agreed to focus its efforts for 2026 on four key priorities:

 

  • Maximizing the learning growth of all students (goal 1 in the school’s 2025-28 strategic plan);
  • Building the social and emotional capabilities, and therefore the wellness, of all students (goal 2 in the school’s 2025-28 strategic plan);
  • Ensuring the successful completion and opening of the new building and using the opportunity this presents us to upgrade the school’s grounds; and
  • Building communication and connection amongst the school’s stakeholders – kids, parents, staff, school leadership, council, and the broader community.

 

To help drive these priorities, we have streamlined our subcommittee structure and constituted a smaller number of committees with a broader and deeper mandate.  This will, hopefully, allow these committees to develop a greater critical mass and drive more impact.  We have also established a temporary task force to focus on the opening and initial operations of the new building.  The new gym will be a great space for our community while also providing the school an opportunity to generate additional income for reinvestment into the library, STEAM room, grounds, and other priorities.  However, we need to balance these potentially competing priorities.  Getting this balance right will be a focus of this task force.

 

Finally, it is a pleasure to report the success (again!) of the summer fair this year.  It raised $34,000 for the school.  A big thanks to everyone who bought food, drink, ride passes, movie tickets, cakes, and everything else that was on offer.  A special thanks to James Spalding, chair of the fundraising committee, for his tireless leadership and to everyone who contributed – big to small – to this great outcome.
