A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the JLC on Springvale Campus
This term has been a wonderful start to the year in the Junior Learning Centre, with students enthusiastically engaging in a range of rich and meaningful learning experiences across the curriculum.
In Reading, students have been learning to make connections with the texts they read. They have been developing their ability to talk about what has happened in a story and describe how characters may be feeling. Students have made links to their prior knowledge, as well as making connections to other books they have read by comparing plots and characters.
In Writing, students have been learning to write simple sentences. They have been focusing on creating sentences that express one clear idea, including a noun, a verb and an adjective to add detail. Students have also been practising using capital letters at the beginning of sentences and full stops at the end.
In Mathematics, students have been learning to measure the length of objects. They have explored measuring using informal units such as unifix blocks, MAB, and icy pole sticks. Students have also been comparing and ordering objects from shortest to longest, explaining their thinking using mathematical language. They have begun to explore using formal metric units to measure, compare, and order objects.
In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been learning to recognise their emotions and what causes them. They have been identifying their own feelings and considering how others might be feeling in different situations. Students have explored how emotions can be shown through body language and discussed experiences that may trigger different emotions, helping them to build greater self-awareness and empathy for others.
In Projects, students have learnt about Bunjil and his importance in Aboriginal culture, helping them to deepen their understanding of Country and connection to land. Each class has created their own Acknowledgement of Country and explored why we welcome people to our places and discussed the meaning and significance of a Welcome to Country. To support their learning, students participated in the Living Culture incursion, where they engaged in a guided talk about Country and Bunurong history; deepening their understanding of Aboriginal culture and perspectives.
It has been a fantastic Term 1 in the Junior Learning Centre, and we look forward to continuing our learning journey in the term ahead.
