Learning at St Columba's

Making Thinking Visible in Mathematics
At St Columba’s, our approach to mathematics reflects both the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Victorian Curriculum, supporting students to develop confidence, deep understanding and a positive disposition towards learning.
In the PYP, mathematics is about more than arriving at an answer; it is about understanding, reasoning and making meaning. Through an inquiry approach, students explore ideas, ask questions and explain their thinking. This supports them to grow as thinkers and problem-solvers, able to apply their learning in meaningful ways.
A key part of this approach is the use of hands-on materials (manipulatives). Tools such as counters, blocks, and number charts allow students to see and experience mathematical concepts, building a strong foundation before moving to more abstract thinking. You may also hear the term “low floor, high ceiling,” which reflects our commitment to ensuring all learners can access mathematics while still being challenged to extend their thinking.
This approach supports the development of the whole child. As part of our Catholic identity, we value perseverance, reflection, and a growth mindset, supporting students in approaching challenges with confidence, curiosity, and care for their own learning journey.
Key ideas that guide our approach include as stated on the IB website:
- Inquiry supports deep understanding through exploration and questioning
- Simple tools, such as a 100-chart, can lead to rich mathematical thinking
- Hands-on and digital resources work together to support learning
- Time, patience and flexibility are essential for deep understanding
- Collaboration and reflection strengthen confidence and communication
Maths Open Morning
We warmly invite you to join us for our Maths Open Morning:
Friday 29th May
8:45 – 9:15 am (Hall)
9:15 – 9:45 am (Classrooms)
This session will focus on:
- Practical maths resources for use at home
- How we use hands-on materials to support learning
- Ways you can support your child in mathematics
You will then have the opportunity to visit classrooms and see mathematics learning in action.
