Kids in Space

The Year 6 class have begun working on their submissions for the Kids in Space program. Their mission is to solve a real world problem using space technology. They began with a walk and several discussions trying to identify problems in our local community. Here are some of their brainstorm ideas:

The problems identified were narrowed down democratically. The two groups have chosen to:

  1. Develop a solution for the pothole problem on our local roads.
  2. Find ways to better protect endangered wildlife from bushfires.

They have begun collaboratively working on researching, designing displays and creating models for their showcase later in the term.

Last week students in 3/4 K joined Andy Griffiths in an online webinar to talk all things writing!

It was perfect timing to help us come up with some great story ideas for our Mount Beauty Writers Festival entries (due by 24th Aug).

Andy talked about where he gets his ideas from (turning every day items, places and events into over the top and extraordinary, tension grabbing action adventures)!

Some on Andy's Writing Strategies we learned about included:

  • Turning regular words into silly/exciting words e.g Johnny + Knucklehead = Johnny Knucklehead (character name)
  • Turning regular items into amazing story elements e.g Kids Bike.... just add a portable pizza oven, flamin' trainin' wheels, umbrella, comfier couch chair and an 'all-purpose poking hand' = incredible item in a story
  • 'Oh yeah' and 'Oh no' series of problems and solutions = an exciting story plot

We'll be using these great writing strategies over the next few weeks as we complete our own narrative writing pieces.

The class also created fun 'You and Me and the Gigantic...' posters which we've entered in a competition to hopefully win a signed copy of Andy's new book!

PS - stay tuned.... 3/4K also have some exciting news - our class has been selected from schools across Victoria to have some of our students read a class question in the live book week webinar 'Symphony of Stories with Josh Pike' (event hosted by the State Library of Victoria). In the webinar on Tues 25th Aug we'll be creating a tailor-made song with Josh!

This week Prep/1 students have been learning all about the water cycle. Perfect timing with all the rain we have had! Students also made play dough and then had fun working in teams to model different fruits, vegetables and even their favourite animals! Can you guess what we made?
