Dear Families

A warm welcome to Term 3. Whilst holidays provide a timely pause to rest, reflect and reenergise from the term, for many in our community, particularly among our Year 11 cohort, the holiday break was a time of sadness and loss following the death of their friend and peer, Kate Wagner. Yesterday, the year group commenced the day with a beautiful prayer service to honour Kate and her friendship with many. A student at the College since Kindergarten, Kate had an incredible zest for life and never stopped seeking joy, even in the toughest moments of her recent and complex illness. Kate reminded us of how important it is to be present, to live in the moment and to take nothing for granted. She was generous, spirited, and brave, and will be missed by her friends, her Homeroom peers and the Loreto House family.

A prayer for Kate

Let us pray for Kate, a loved child of God. Though Kate has left our lives too soon, may she flourish, forever young, and enjoy unending peace and happiness in the presence of Christ.

Let us pray for Kate’s mum and dad, as they grieve the loss of their beloved daughter. May Kate’s parents, Jo and Shane, know the gentle, consoling presence of Christ at their side in all their tears and pain.

Let us pray for ourselves in all the various emotions we are experiencing. May the Spirit guide us to stay true to ourselves and our own feelings. May we support one another to fulfill Kate’s loving hope that we go on with our lives.

Let us pray for the family of John XXIII College, that Kate made brighter through her smile, kindness and welcome. May we all appreciate the joy of friendship and the gift of belonging to a community.

Amen

Staff Update

This week we welcome the return of Ms Catherine Roberts (Mathematics teacher and Loyola House Coordinator) and Pippa Pickering (Religious Education and Year 12 Ward Homeroom teacher) from leave. A warm welcome also to Mr Jack Marrell (Health and Physical Education teacher and Year 9 Koolyangarra Homeroom teacher) who has replaced Ms Ella Brindley.

Athletics Carnival

The Interhouse Athletics Carnival takes place next Friday at the State Athletics Stadium. This is a compulsory day for all Secondary students. As a day of fantastic House spirit and competition, students are required to wear their full College sport uniform with House shirt and hat and should have appropriate warm and wet weather clothing. The carnival commences at 8:15am and will conclude by 3:00pm. Students are expected to make their way to and from the venue; however, transport will be provided for students who are not able to do so.

Parents are welcome to join us on the day. We hope to see you there!

John XXIII Day - Friday, 8 August

One of the most significant days of the College calendar, John XXIII Day is a community day where students celebrate our founders and heritage, and fundraise to support our College partners, Jesuit Mission Australia and Mary Ward International. This year, we are excited to announce that over 20 staff and Year 12 Student Representative Councillors are prepared to take the plunge into an ice bath to raise money for Jesuit Mission Australia.

Jesuit Mission works in more than 10 countries across Asia and Africa to uphold the innate dignity of people living with the effects of poverty, especially the most marginalised and vulnerable. Their current focus is to raise awareness and desperately needed funds to support people in Myanmar. Since the military coup and devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake, Myanmar has become a disaster zone. While our students walk safely throughout our campus, children in Myanmar are walking to escape air bombings and hiding in mountains and forests without food or water. Over 22 million people, many of them children, desperately need emergency assistance.

Every $200 raised will see one staff member and one Year 12 SRC take the plunge. As an additional challenge to promote much-needed funds for Jesuit Mission’s work, I will take the plunge if $5,000 is raised, and Mr Mahon will do so for $10,000. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made directly to Jesuit Mission Australia here.

Let’s get together to help the people of Myanmar to put one foot forward.
