On Friday, 15th August, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady. This Solemnity, one of the oldest celebrations in honour of Mary, is a Holy Day of Obligation.
Mary was a strong and honourable woman who remained faithful to God throughout her life. She served God by becoming the Mother of Jesus, raising Him, believing in Him, and staying with Him even at His death on the Cross. The Assumption marks her being taken into heaven and reunited with her Son. She is crowned as Queen of Heaven and seated at His right hand. Mary continues to care for the Church and intercedes for all who seek her help.
Although the Blessed Virgin has entered into heavenly glory, the late Pope Francis reminded us: “This does not mean that she is distant or detached from us. The Assumption of Our Lady should bring eternal hope to the faithful… May we not be robbed of hope, because this strength is a grace, a gift from God which carries us forward with our eyes fixed on heaven. Mary is always there… she accompanies us, suffers with us, sings of hope with us, and brings victory over death.”
You are warmly invited to attend our Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady Mass at 9:15 am on Friday, 15th August.
A Vinnies School Sleepout provides a unique insight into the complex issues that people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage faced by 'sleeping rough' for one night. Vinnies provides vulnerable people with essential support to rebuild their lives and reconnect with the community, but they couldn’t do it without the support of people like you.
On Tuesday, 26th August, from 6:00 pm- 7:30 pm, St Francis Xavier will be participating in our school Winter Sleepout to make a real difference in the lives of the people experiencing homelessness every night. To acknowledge and recognise Father figures in our lives, this sleepout is an opportunity for fathers, grandfathers and father figures and their children to not only spend some time together, but to gain a deeper understanding of homelessness and the realities faced by people experiencing homelessness. There will be an opportunity for prayer, cardboard shelter making, a guest speaker and soup and bread for dinner, to put ourselves in the shoes of the less fortunate.
To raise awareness and support those experiencing homelessness, parents and students will brave the cold, spend time outside and come together as a community. Please find details attached in the flyer.
We look forward to this experience as a St Francis Xavier community. If you have any questions, please contact the school office.
Thank you for all the generous donation, this is a testament of "serviam" in action.
The Vinnies van will be collecting all our donations tomorrow afternoon (Friday 15 August)
