Term 3 has begun with some great learning across the whole school.

Foundation

In Literacy, they have been busy learning about the letters J and W and their sounds.  This week they will be introduced to 'ck' saying /k/.  Making Predictions is a reading strategy that has been introduced to the Prep classes.  They have used their predicting skills to say what they think the story, "My Two Blankets" will be about, and have listened to the story to see if their predictions were correct.

Gr 1

Grade One children are using the digraphs /ay/ and /ai/ and /ee/ and /ea/ in their spelling this week.  They are reading a new storybook called, "Bears Don't Read" and will use this text to focus on learning some new vocabulary.

Gr 2

Grade Two children have read the story book called The Story of Rosy Dock. They have learnt to summarize some key events in the story in sequence. For Spelling they have been revising how to segment words into sounds. They have revised silent letters such as “k” in knee and “b” in lamb.

and metal tools. We will continue to develop our vocabulary with words taken from this text also.

Our new text type this term will be 'Information Reports'. We will study their purpose, the different types of Information Reports, their structure and features eg present tense. We have also revised sentence types (statement, question, command, exclamation) and begun learning how to convert from one type to another. Students have begun working on note-taking skills this week as well.

During Spelling we will revise suffixes -es (boxes) and -s (chairs) and continue working on words containing the graphemes or/ore/oor/au eg saucepan, poorly, sore, forsaken.

In Grammar we have begun learning about simple and compound sentences and adverbs.

This term we have begun our new unit on Data Representation for Mathematics.

Gr 3s are learning about sourcing data; comparing data representations to evaluate relevance and effectiveness; using digital tools such as spreadsheets to collate and interpret data. They are also learning that data can be represented in different ways to help enhance meaning.

Gr 4s are learning that data representations can vary, depending on their purpose. They are evaluating graphical representations for accuracy and learning that data can be represented in different ways to help enhance meaning.

Gr 5 and 6

In 5/6, we have started off the Term in Literacy by reading our new class novel ‘Thomas Appleby - Convict Boy’ by Jackie French. This book tells the story of a young chimney sweep, convicted of stealing at age eight, and transported to Botany Bay with the First Fleet. Students have really enjoyed the beginning of this story.

During writing time, we are focusing on summarising a story and also writing an information report about convicts coming to Australia.

Our spelling lessons at the moment are focusing on base words, and how we can add prefixes and suffixes to base words to change the meaning. The base words we are focusing on are 'ven/vent', 'scrib/script' and 'graph/gram'.

In Maths, we are spending the first two weeks of term focusing on the topic of 'Location & Transformation'. In this topic, students are learning about the cartesian plane, plotting points using coordinates and transforming shapes using translation, reflection and rotation. In week 3, we will move onto 'Fractions'.
