Winter School Holidays: Staying Active, Connected & Supported
The winter school holidays are here! While the break offers a great chance to slow down, sleep in, and escape the usual routine, it can also be a time when students feel bored, disconnected, or unsure how to make the most of their free time.
Here are some ideas and supports to help students enjoy a well-rounded and positive break this winter:
Explore, Create, Move
Try something new: Have a go at painting, journaling, cooking a new recipe, or learning a new skill online (try photography, digital design, or even coding!).
Stay active: Head out for a brisk walk with a friend, check out free local sports days or ice skating rinks, or follow a home workout challenge. Exercise is a great way to boost mood and energy during the colder months.
Volunteer or work: Consider spending time giving back to the community through local volunteering programs, or gaining experience (and extra cash!) through casual holiday work.
Stay Connected
Catch up with friends: Organise a movie night, games day, or a study-free hangout. Even just checking in with a message can help everyone feel supported.
School holiday programs: Many local councils and youth services offer free or low-cost events during the break—such as art workshops, gaming tournaments, trivia nights, and adventure days.
Access Support If You Need It
Sometimes holidays can be a tough time—especially if you're feeling isolated or struggling with your mental health. Don't forget that help is always available. Please refer to the list of services below.
Please note that the Wellbeing Team is unavailable during the school holidays. For urgent help, reach out to one of the supports below.
Final Thoughts
Winter holidays are the perfect time to recharge, reflect, and enjoy things that make you feel good—whether that’s being creative, connecting with others, or simply curling up with a good book.
Stay warm, stay kind to yourself, and we look forward to seeing you back next term!
