From the Year 1 Classroom

Welcome to Term 3! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable holiday break. We're excited to have our students back and look forward to a wonderful term filled with learning, growth, and new opportunities.

We warmly welcome Aaryana Tissera and Halle Nicholas to Grade 1. We hope you both enjoy your time at our wonderful school, and your families feel at home in our school community.

Grandparents Day – Friday, 25th July

We are very much looking forward to celebrating Grandparents Day this Friday, 25th July. It’s always a special occasion to welcome grandparents and grandfriends into our school community.

The day will begin with a liturgy in the MPB at Sacred Heart College at 9:45am. Following this, guests are invited to visit classrooms at the Primary School from 10:15am to 11:10am. To conclude the morning, we will provide a morning tea from 11:10am to 11:40am.

We hope you can join us for this joyful celebration!

Literacy

This week we are looking at the ow in cow and ou in cloud digraphs. The children are learning to read and write words containing these sounds. The words now, how, down and brown, out and around are very useful words that we’d like you to be reading and spelling at home with your child.

We have read a new storybook called The Story about Ping, where children have been summarising the beginning, the middle (problem) and the ending of the story. Our new vocabularly words taken from this text are pale, dash and swiftly. You could practice creating interesting sentences containing these words for a challenge!

Our new Tricky Words for this fortnight are fast, last and I’m.

Home Reading- Please remember that your child should be reading for 10-15 minutes, four times a week. Please remember to send in your child’s reading satchel each day so they can change their levelled readers each morning before school begins. On Fridays, the teachers collect the dairies to see what wonderful reading has been taking place! If you are unsure of what level your child should be bringing home, please email your child’s teacher.  Also, our decodable readers are all online and texts have been set for each child. Lots of the children are loving this resource, so if you haven’t checked it out already, scan the QR code on the front of your child’s Term 3 Reading Diary that was sent home at the end of last term. Happy reading!

Maths – Measuring with Informal Units

Over the next two weeks, students will be learning to measure length using informal units such as paperclips, unifix cubes, and blocks. This hands-on approach is always a favourite, allowing students to explore measurement in a fun and practical way.

They will learn to choose suitable units, measure and compare objects, and estimate lengths before checking their answers. This unit builds on their previous learning and helps lay the foundation for understanding formal units of measurement in the future.

Religion – Jesus' Story

In the first half of this term, students will begin a new unit in Religion titled Jesus’ Story. In this unit, they will explore stories about Jesus from the four Gospels in the New Testament. They will learn that the Bible is a sacred book that helps us understand God’s love and how Jesus is a model for how we can live our lives today.

Through this unit, students will come to see Jesus as a teacher and guide who shows us how to make good choices, care for others, and live with compassion. They will recall key stories from the Gospels and begin to relate these to their own lives and experiences.

By the end of the unit, students will understand the Gospels as an important source for learning about Jesus and his message of love, kindness, and faith.

Inquiry – Earth in the Solar System

In Inquiry, we are excited to begin our new unit, Earth in the Solar System. Space is always a fascinating and popular topic among students. Through hands-on activities, investigations, and interactive learning, students will explore the planets, the phases of the moon, how shadows change with the Sun's movement, and the patterns we can observe in the stars.

Important Dates

  • Pupil Free Day – Wednesday 13th August

  • Learning Conversations – 26th and 27th August

  • Athletics Carnival – Friday 12th September

As always, thank you for your continued support – it makes a big difference in your child’s learning journey.

Kind regards,

Kristy, Sarah and Mik
