Welcome back to Term 3! We hope everyone had a well rested holiday break and didn't catch the winter flu! It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the year and almost at the end of the month on July. Let’s have a look at what we did at the beginning of July.
In the first week of July we celebrated NAIDOC Week—a national week-long event inviting all Australians to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through art, stories, ceremonies, and community gatherings. At our Community Hub, the Women’s Wellbeing group had a blast baking healthy oat and flaxseed muffins and Weet-Bix balls, which we shared with staff across both campuses during our Morning Tea for Culture. This special event—hosted by VACCA (Victorian Aboriginal Child & Community Agency)—was held to raise funds for and awareness in support of Aboriginal children in care. Through our donations, Springvale Rise Primary Sshool contributed to VACCA’s cultural programs—such as art mentoring, camps, the Koorie Tiddas choir, and other activities—that help children stay connected to their traditions, identity, and community, strengthening resilience and healing. It was a heartfelt way to honour NAIDOC Week!
We were also honoured to welcome our local Member of Parliament Eden Foster into our Community Hub. Our families were deeply touched that she took the time to listen to everyone’s stories and learn firsthand about the issues they’re facing. During the visit, our women generously shared their homemade biryani and other delicious treats with Eden and her team, making the experience even more special. The genuine connection and warmth she showed made the visit truly memorable.
Lastly, our playgroup families were thrilled to visit Springvale Service for Children’s Toy Library. Normally, memberships cost around $70 a year, but thanks to a collaboration with Toy Well, ten of our families received subsidised memberships, allowing them to borrow up to six toys every two weeks at no cost. The children had a wonderful time exploring toys and even took home an activity gift pack filled with holiday fun. This initiative supports sustainable play—encouraging families to borrow instead of buy, and to experience something fresh with each visit. We’re excited to continue our partnership with Springvale Service for Children and look forward to our next visit, where the children will also enjoy stories and songs at the centre.
