A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Springvale Campus

The MLC students have made a fantastic start to Term 3, settling back into routines with enthusiasm and excitement. We have a fun-filled term ahead, packed with rich learning experiences!

In Reading, students have been developing their skills in visualising and making inferences. They are learning to connect their own experiences to the text and combine text clues with their mental images to make thoughtful inferences. It’s been wonderful to see students explaining what characters might be thinking or feeling and justifying their ideas using evidence from the story.

In Writing, students are focusing on character descriptions. They are learning to use adjectives to describe both the physical appearance and personality traits of their characters. By appealing to the five senses and using thoughtful language, they are beginning to create vivid characters that come to life for the reader.

In Maths, we have dived back into subtraction. This week, students are exploring efficient strategies, including subtracting 9 by thinking of - 10 + 1 and applying their knowledge of related facts to solve two-digit problems. They are also developing their understanding of fact families to help strengthen their number sense and mental strategies.

In Projects, students are learning to gather and represent information about their local area. They are identifying familiar community places like their home, school, shops, parks, and more. Using maps and tools such as Google Earth, students will locate and describe the positions of these places using distance and compass directions. They will then create their own maps, adding symbols to show the features and activities that make up their community.

We’re looking forward to an exciting and productive term of learning!
