Sustainability in Action

WELCOME TO OUR TERM 3 SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM

Although Winter time is a slower growing time in our school veggie gardens, there is still plenty to do during this time.

  • Last week, children from Prep and Grade 2 helped to mulch and manure our Raspberry plants and fruit trees. We used leaves as mulch, and we added Alpaca manure to help the plants grow.
  • We used our gumboots as the ground was wet and muddy. This helps to keep our classrooms clean.
  • Our Winter crops, including garlic, broad beans, silverbeet, broccoli and cabbage, are growing well.

OUR SEED TO SEEDLING PROJECT

This week, we begin planting seeds that will grow into plants we can use in our gardens later in the year. The children will be planting Tomato, silverbeet, zucchini, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds to name a few. During the colder weather, will will need to find warm, sunny places where our seeds can germinate and grow.

DONATION OF NATIVE PLANTS FOR OUR SCHOOL

Last week, our school received a donation of 30 native plants (mainly bottlebrush) to plant in our school grounds. This is part of a local initiative to plant 365 trees in our area; one plant for each day of this year. We will be looking at where we should plant these trees in the coming weeks. We are very grateful for this donation.
