Student Leadership in Action
We are proud of the direction and strength of our Student Leadership Program at Greenhills. Our Year 5/6 LEAD program provides students with a strong foundation for developing and demonstrating the qualities of effective leadership.
In Year 5, students begin by learning about the traits of successful leaders and work towards earning four leadership badges:
L – Listen E – Empower A – Agency D – Drive
In Year 6, students can earn two additional badges:
E – Engage R – Reflect
To earn a badge, students must provide three documented examples of how they have demonstrated that leadership quality. These are then reviewed and approved by their classroom teacher and a member of the Principal Team. In Year 6, these badges become a key part of the process for selecting formal Student Leadership positions.
All Year 5/6 students are seen as leaders, regardless of whether they hold a badge or a formal role. Each Friday, students work in Action Teams that aim to make a meaningful impact on our school and the wider community. At the end of Term 1, the Year 5/6 cohort came together to celebrate their progress and look ahead to Semester 2. Below are summaries of some of the exciting work being undertaken by our Student Leadership Teams:
Community Action Team
This team is planning a visit to Leith Park Retirement Home in Term 3, where they will share books, games, crafts and dances to foster intergenerational connection. They also held a successful bake sale to raise funds for [insert cause], and will be volunteering at the local Neighbourhood House to assist with food collection and organisation for people in need.
Environment Action Team
Focused on improving our school’s outdoor spaces, this team has started work in the courtyard area between the Library, Art and Music rooms, including weeding and repurposing the space. They are also planning to install a Friendship Tree near Curiosity Creek, maintain the creek area, support the regeneration of Bruce Oval, and develop vegetable patches for each grade to maintain.
Diversity and Inclusion Action Team
Dedicated to ensuring all students feel safe and accepted, this team has launched a lunchtime Safe Space Club and a “Hangout Hub.” They are also planning to create a multicultural mural on one of the portables and are organising an Inclusion Parade to celebrate the diverse identities in our school community.
House Captains
Our House Captains have led a number of initiatives to build connection and house spirit across the school. They’ve organised lunchtime house sport activities, house face painting, and supported our major house events, including the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. They also helped run the Gazillions Day Disco and are currently planning a House Fun Day for Semester 2.
Teaching and Learning Action Team
This team has conducted student voice interviews across the school to gather feedback on what’s working well and what could be improved in learning. They’ve been analysing the data, creating graphs, and preparing summaries to share with teachers to help guide future teaching practice.
