Trusting God with our children’s future

As we find ourselves well into Term 3, things are really starting to ramp up! Already there have been camps, excursions, and even a Year 9 Right Journey rough sleep out!

Last week our Year 9-11 students were given the opportunity to think about the subjects they would like to study in the coming year, with a view to working towards a particular career pathway.

Talk about confronting!

I remember when I was a young student, trying to piece together a career path that seemed rather daunting. Perhaps that may have been the case for the students in your home.

So, as the responsible adults in their lives, how can we best support them in these moments?

A great place to start is the Bible; what does the Scripture have to say about trusting God for our future plans?

Below are a number of passages that I pray will encourage your hearts and provide a foundation for prayer, as you comfort, counsel and lead the children in your care.

Psalm 119:105 tells us, ‘Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path’. (NIV)

The writer of Proverbs 19:21 says, ‘Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails’. (NIV)

The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:28, ‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose’.

Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.'

In the coming weeks, subjects for next year will be finalised, and career paths will begin to be explored. Whatever that journey looks like for you and your child, my encouragement is that you would trust in God.

In a society and culture that loves to have a five-year plan, that loves to know and plan accordingly, that desires a floodlight for the highway (not a lamp unto our feet) it can seem counter-intuitive to walk in a place of trust, but as followers of Jesus, that is what we are called to do… Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart. He will direct our steps and shape the journey forward.

Work diligently, plan to achieve the goals, encourage study and do your best; absolutely! But even still, trust in God as you do so!

Peace to you and Yours,
