We’ve had a busy term in our STEM program with lots of questions, curiosity, experiments and hands-on activities in every year level. Here’s a brief summary of our scientific ‘discoveries’ this term.
- Preps asked questions about what scientists do and have drawn insightful pictures of scientists ‘doing science’ including looking for dinosaur bones and making potions.
- Year 1’s discovered that the whole world is made of chemicals and predicted how chemicals react when mixed together.
- Year 2’s learnt about the water cycle and increased their vocabulary of words ending in –tion; evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection, transpiration.
- Year 3’s investigated differences between living and non-living things and noticed that it’s not as easy as they thought, as sometimes non-living things appear to behave like living things!
- Year 4’s examined properties of materials under different magnifications and explored conductors/insulators, magnetic/non-magnetic, waterproof/absorbent and raw/processed materials.
- Year 5’s explored states of matter by weighing air and classified solids, liquids and gases…and everything in between!
- Year 6’s used ‘bird beaks’ to learn about adaptation and which birds were ‘best fit’ to their environment.
It’s been a fun and frantic term so far, and I look forward to continuing the inquiry, investigation and inspiration in our STEM classes!
