Celebrating Cheryll

When we at SPS think of Cheryl, we think Community!

Cheryll Peters moved to Somerville with her family in 1977. She started her career with the shire in 1988. It took 3 years, but she moved into our favourite crossing spot in 1991, when her son attended Somerville PS.

This was to be Cheryll’s last crossing posting and she has kept our children safe ever since!

Kasey says My boys are going to miss her so much (and so am I)!

When talking to Cheryll it’s clear she’ll miss the special bond she has made with the kids of Somerville Primary School past, present & future.

Cheryll has seen the school transform over the years, countless new buildings, facelifts & Principals later. She remembers historical events like the electrical fire in the office, the schools separating into 2 in 1996 but her most cherished memories are of the Annual Footy Day Parade.

Cheryll loved seeing hoards of well-wishers clapping the children as they marched proudly down the main street adorned in their favourite teams colours.

The inception of the Somerville Slammers basketball team was an extremely proud moment for Cheryll, sharing her love of basketball with the Community.

Cheryll is a big believer that community, and basketball in particular are fantastic places for children to grow and learn while staying active. After a long association with the sport one of Cheryll’s proudest achievements was being presented the award for the all inclusion basketball program twice over.

Cheryll will still be seen around SPS volunteering her time in various endeavours such is her giving and selfless nature, so you will still get to say hello to her.

The prep’s over the years have enjoyed a lovely incursion with her learning all about road safety.

Cheryll’s lasting legacy is mirrored in her favourite phrase, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind”, these words of wisdom also happen to be a permanent fixture at the front of the school for Cheryll to have read all this time.

The Students, Parent/Carers and Staff wish you all the best in your retirement and appreciate all your dedicated years of service. You are leaving very big shoes to fill!
