From the Deputy Principal

At the end of 2023 the College finalized the development of a few strategies related to wellbeing and behaviour support. These are designed to amplify the positive environment of the College. These include a Good Standing Guidelines and Our Mazza Way, which is a student-developed peer code of conduct. We have also emphasised our existing The Productive Classroom guidelines.

The Good Standing Guidelines provide clarification on a protocol already included in the Behaviour Policy. All other interventions and expectations will continue to be applied in these instances too. The guidelines stipulate behaviours that may lead to a loss of good standing, the result of which is a preclusion from all College extra- and co-curricular activities not directly associated with a course of study. A loss of good standing will extend for up to five weeks. During this time, Heads of Learning and Heads of Year will work with the student to encourage a restoration of positive behaviour.

We have had The Productive Classroom guidelines in place in our classrooms already but the College has taken the opportunity to rearticulate to our teachers and students what a productive classroom looks like, in the small acts and big. Some examples are having a respectful manner with teachers, standing for adults as they enter the room and adhering to the hair and uniform policy. This shared understanding provides a foundation for what we all expect to see, hear and feel when relationships are focused on respect and productivity.

Our Mazza Way was developed by a working group of over 40 students last year and speaks to their rights and responsibilities as a Mazenodian. The language and expectations are their own but you will quickly see we can all share them. This is not a punitive document for teachers but a way students can have a common language and amplify the voices that notice and celebrate the best of our community.

I have shared the documents here and they can also be found on SEQTA on the welcome page in the key documents section.

I encourage you to familiarise yourselves with these documents so you are aware of the language and focus on respectful relationships, in and out of the classroom this year, when you discuss your son’s school experience with him.
