2024 House Swimming Carnival

Earlier this week, as Perth continued to scorch, the Mazenod students relished the opportunity for some time in the pool. The boys once again showed their House spirit and sportsmanship in what was a wonderful carnival. There were some outstanding individual and team performances.

After winning last year, for the first time since 2006, the ‘Green Machine’ Gerard House proved that was no fluke, and once again claimed the Fr Kevin Davine House Swimming Trophy!

A huge thank you to Trish & Trevor Verran from Guildford & Kalamunda Swimming Club, who again gave up their own time and equipment to run the starts and timing system for our carnival. I would also like to thank the HPE team, all staff who helped with the carnival, and all the parents and family members who came along to support the event.

It is a pleasure to announce and congratulate the students below who are the Champion Boy & Runner up Champion Boys for their year group. They will be presented with their official trophy at the Sports Awards Dinner in Term 4. Well done! Amazingly, there was a 3-way tie for runner up in the Year 10 carnival.

Senior School Tennis Championships

The recently concluded Mazenod College Senior School Tennis Championships showcased an impressive display of skill and sportsmanship among the competitors. The tournament featured talented players, namely Ryan A, Lachlan U, Lachlan S and Will M, who competed in round-robin games.

The standout performer of the championship was Lachlan U, who secured the Senior Championship for the second time. He demonstrated exceptional prowess on the court, navigating through the competition with an undefeated record. His victories were hard-fought, with several close games that added an extra layer of excitement to the tournament.

Congratulations to Lachlan U and well done to all the participants for their outstanding performances, contributing to the success of the tournament. Lachlan U will now lead the College Senior Team in the upcoming interschool competition Mursel Shield in Week 7.

Round 1 Tuesday 13 February 2024

Mazenod College v Swan Christian

The first game of the 20/20 season was away, with Mazenod winning the toss and choosing to bat. Their innings struggled to really get going with Swan Christian bowling tight and getting important wickets. This resulted in Mazenod scoring 99 runs with 8 wickets down off their 20 overs. A below par score but still defendable on the long boundaries on the MCG (Mazenod Cricket Ground).

Top scorers with the bat were Captain Harry G scoring 39 runs off 53 balls and Nate T with 16 runs off 13 balls.

In the second innings Mazenod took to the field to try to defend their total of 99 runs. They managed to get a couple early wickets, but a couple dropped catches and misfields proved costly with the visitors reaching the total in 17.4 overs.

Lachlan ‘Turbo’ S was the pick of the bowlers with 2/18 off his 4 overs, while Vicario G took 1/20 off 3 overs and Micah ‘The Wizard’ A was super economical with only 14 runs off his 4 overs.

Round 2 Wednesday 21 February 2024

Mazenod College vs John Forrest Secondary College

In Round 2, Mazenod travelled to John Forrest SC to play on their turf pitch, hoping to get back on the winners list. It was going to be a tough task with multiple changes to the Round 1 team. Both Captain Harry G & Vice-Captain Lachlan S were out and amongst the changes but luckily Braden F was back in the line-up and stepped up to the Captain duties with ease. Mazenod did start the day by losing the toss and were put into bat but were more then happy to post a score.

The boys batted extremely well, posting 170 runs off their 20 overs, with only 2 wickets down. Jevan B was backed in by the coaches to open the batting again, where he rewarded them by scoring a classy unbeaten 92 runs, with 3 big 6’s. It’s Jevan’s first half century of his career and I’m sure there will be plenty more! He was also well supported with the bat by acting Captain Braden F with 46 runs not out, including 1 big 6 over mid-wicket to end the innings.

Mazenod then took to the field in the second innings to defend their 170 runs. The boys bowled and fielded extremely well, with opening bowler Riley ‘Goulden Arm’ G back to his best, taking 3 early wickets for 3 runs off his 3 overs.

All the bowlers contributed well, keeping the home team to 7 wickets for 58 runs, off their 20 overs. Pick of the bowlers along with Riley G were, Dylan W 1/7 off 3 overs and debutant Fynn T who took 1/11 off 3 overs.

Round 3 is back home at the Mazenod Cricket Ground (MCG) next Wednesday, 28 February @ 12:30pm, against Bullbrook SHS. The boys are very keen to get out there and keep their winning record going in Season 2024.
