Visual Arts

Carly & Steph

Welcome back to another exciting year of Visual Arts at AHPS!

The Specialists Team would like to wish our beloved Suzie all the best at her new school for 2024 and would like to welcome Stephanie Cundari who will be teaching some Visual Arts in S.T.E.A.M. Room 1, alongside Carly Ford in S.T.E.A.M. Room 2.

This year we are off to a flying start, diving straight into the fundamentals of art and drawing, with a strong focus on The Art Elements including: line, shape, colour and value.

Foundation

The Foundation/Prep Communities are currently working on pencil control, tracing dotted lines and learning to make marks using different mediums; from pencils and oil pastels to markers. They are developing an understanding of line and how to create lines in different ways; thick, thin, zigzag, scribbly, short, wandering, scrambled. They look at how lines can be repeated to create patterns and will eventually create shapes and artwork from these skills. We wish our new Preps all the very best for their primary school journey and hope they find our Visual Arts program complimentary to their regular classroom curriculum.

Grades 1-2

The Grade 1 and 2 Communities are all exploring the use of line in art, particularly, size, colour and direction, using a variety of artistic mediums. They are introduced to the concept of contrast by comparing long to short, straight to curly, thick to thin, up to down, red to green and rough to smooth. They have also started turning lines into shapes and using repeated lines to make patterns around shapes.

Grades 3-4

The Grade 3 and 4 Communities are learning to combine and repeat line work to create texture and pattern, whilst exploring the effects of contrast and movement. Students can draw a connection between line and the expression of feelings such as: thick and bold for anger, jerky and light for frightened; up, down and around for happiness.

Grades 5-6

The Grade 5 and 6 Communities are using varying lines of light and dark to bring life to their drawings. They are exploring the versatility of lines including: contour drawings (shading and cross-hatching); repeated and combined lines to make implied texture; and how to arrange lines to make a point of emphasis in order to draw the eye.
