French Programs

Sophie Oldfield

As part of our campaign to promote our French Specialist Programs at AHS, our Principal Ross Pritchard, 7-9 Assistant Principal Kristie Satilmis, Geneviève Papon and myself visited both Caulfield Junior College & Camberwell Primary School during week 6 to present our French Specialist programs to prospective families. Both visits were received positively by the families attending. We also hosted our very successful school tour dedicated to the French programs.

The official launch of “N’oubliez jamais”, a French educational kit on WW2

Since November 2022, a team of volunteer teachers with extensive experience in curriculum design and teaching French to Year 9-12 students have worked on creating a 20-minute documentary on the life of Esther Wise. Esther is a 99 year old Holocaust survivor who speaks fluent French and who migrated to Melbourne many years ago.

The educational kit, created by AHS parent Lucie Dickens and Nathalie Marchand of the Association of French Teachers of Victoria, is marking the centenary of Esther Wise and is an invaluable free resource for teachers of French and history. The kit includes subtitles in French and English, transcripts and translations, and exercises with answers.

Auburn High School was invited to the launch, alongside the new Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Pierre-André Imbert and the Honorary Consul General of France in Melbourne, Miriam Boisbouvier-Wylie, as well as Esther’s family. We feel very fortunate to have been able to meet with this formidable woman who will hopefully inspire today’s youth with her message of courage and peace.

AHS French Choir

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the first AHS French choir, led by Madame Beck. If you are a talented singer or just enjoy singing and learning French songs, then come along to the French choir, every Tuesday at lunchtime! À bientôt en musique!

2024 Alliance française French Film Festival

AHS is once again a proud local sponsor and donor of the Alliance Française French Film Festival which is now taking place in several cinemas around Melbourne. Every year, the festival offers an amazing selection of over 40 French films.

Our recommendation includes family friendly films such as Princes of The Desert, Kina & Yuk and animated feature Nina and the Secret of the Hedgehog. Romance drama The Snow Must Go On is a joyful film about finding meaning at any stage of life and preserving the natural world.

Bon film!
