Foundation-Grade 1 Miss Bennett

The last two weeks in the F/1 beehive have been a very busy blur with so much wonderful learning to celebrate. Some of our highlights over the last two weeks have been:

Grade 1 phonics:

The Grade 1 students have been so engaged in phonics this term, they have been learning all about the final y in words making a long e sound, like in the word 'happy'. To help with their learning Grade 1 students had to practice writing words with a final --y sound and then write the sentence "The Pony is happy."

Foundation phonics:

The Foundation students have now learned 3 letters, sounds and friends that will be going to 'Milo's birthday surprise'. This week they were introduced to 'Felix the Frog'. They have been loving practicing writing these on their mini whiteboards. I wonder which friend we will learn from next.

Our very first swimming carnival:

The most popular event over the past two weeks is our very first St Patrick's Swimming Carnival. Miss Bennett was so impressed with how everyone behaved at the swimming carnival and gave every event a 'Red hot Go'. If our very first one was like this we can't wait until we do swimming week later on in the year.

Clean up Australia Day: On Friday, the whole-school went out and did a really big clean up of our school yard and community for Clean Up Australia Day. The F/1 students were really engaged in their pre-learning about Clean Up Aus Day. They enjoyed learning about which rubbish goes into which coloured bin.

Maths magicians: All of our maths learning has been so excellent and each student has improved so much over the course of the year and we're only at week 6!! The maths we have been learning is how to represent numbers in different ways in Foundation, like using tens frames, writing numerals, and tally marks. In Grade 1 the students have been developing their tens and ones skills with numbers 0-100, they have been using the Base 10 blocks to help make the number and write the number.

Mrs Stockdale taking us to the library: How fantastic is it when our wonderful principal Mrs Stockdale takes us to the library for a visit to borrow our weekly books and then reads us a picture story book. This has been one of the F/1's favourite things this week.

 Grade 1-2 Miss Hart

In Grade 1 and 2 we have been learning about Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy as part of our Resilience Project lessons.

Gratitude is paying attention to what we have. Empathy is understanding how other people feel. Mindfulness is about being calm and present in any given moment. Emotional Literacy is about labelling our emotions.

At the end of every day, students in Grade 1 and 2 have the opportunity to share something they are grateful for or something that went well for them that day. Here is what the students said today!!

‘I am grateful for playing with my friends at snack and lunch.’

‘I am grateful for my family that loves me.’

‘I am grateful for Miss Hart.’

‘I am grateful for my classmates.’

‘I am grateful for this Earth.’

‘I am grateful for my dog.’

‘I am grateful for yummy food.’

Grade 4 Mrs Loughran

The Grade 4 students had their class Liturgy on Tuesday.

The focus for this Liturgy was Project Compassion which is Caritas Australia's main annual fundraising campaign. It asks Australians to raise much-needed funds to help alleviate poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity in the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in the world.

Jesus showed his compassion always, especially those who were suffering.   His love is the greatest.

Jesus showed us God’s love by the way he lived his life, and in his care of the lonely, the sick and the poor.

Through his example, Jesus taught us how to love and care for others in our community.

The student practiced two songs: No Greater Love by Father Ron and Give you Love by Jessica Mouboy and Jason Derulo.  The singing was exceptional!! Thanks to all the parents who came to support and join in with the singing.
