SCIENCE

OUR YEAR 7S BEGIN THEIR SCIENCE JOURNEY

Our new Year 7 students have started their Science journey with confidence and enthusiasm this year.

Many of the Year 7 students have never been in a formal wet laboratory before and are not familiar with the procedures and the equipment that we use. They are enjoying using the unfamiliar equipment and developing their skills around the scientific method. For most students, the hardest thing can be remembering to keep their safety glasses on during experiments! The Year 7 Science teachers are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding year with these new scientists.

Below are a few initial reflections from some of our Year 7 students.

Ms Sweeney

Science teacher

In Science so far, I have learnt all of the safety rules needed in the laboratory. I've worn safety glasses and lab coats and lit a few matches so that next we can light a Bunsen burner. I've learnt all the parts and names of science tools and used some test tubes to measure liquids. I was able to record before the experiment and after the experiment and make some hypotheses.

Kiki Johnson Year 7

Over the last two weeks I have learnt lots about a Bunsen burner like which part of the Bunsen burner is which. I had a lot of fun using the test tubes and food colouring for an experiment. I tried lighting a match for the first time and now it's easy for me.

Miya Lee Year 7

During the last two weeks I have learnt about the parts of the Bunsen burner such as the gas hose, gas tap, collar, base etc. I've also learned how to light a Bunsen burner safely and correctly, but sometimes I might need a little reminder. I have also learned about the rules in a Science classroom.

Stephanie Qu Year 7

In Science things can sometimes go wrong, but there is always something to do in the laboratory. Laboratories have lots of rules to follow to be safe. In the laboratory, you can do lots of fun experiments.

Thomas Wengier Year 7

So far Year 7 Science has been epic. In the first week we did an experiment. Now we are learning how to light Bunsen burners. Our class had the best teacher. Her name is Ms Sweeney. Thanks to Ms Sweeney, I am finally enjoying Science and in just a few lessons I learnt everything about the Bunsen burner. Overall Science is a blast. I love it.

Namish Neeli Year 7

In these past few weeks of Science I have learnt some Science laboratory rules such as not to run inside class, to always wear a lab coat and goggles, to wear gloves when doing experiments and to always be sensible and safe during class. I have also learnt to be safe around a Bunsen burner and to identify features of different pieces of laboratory equipment such as a collar on a Bunsen burner, which affects the colour of the flame, (blue is a hotter flame than the orange flame) a test tube, a test tube holder, a measuring cylinder and more. I am really looking forward to learning and doing more things in the Science laboratory.
