This week in Sustainability the Preps have begun to investigate the world of minibeasts - all the little, tiny creatures who quietly work to keep our world in balance. We found out about all the different types of minibeasts who live around us, and their legs! Insects have 6 legs, but spiders have 8, worms don’t have any, and guess who has 1306 legs? The female Eumillipes persephone, a species of millipede discovered in Western Australia in 2021. It lives 60 metres underground, has no eyes and is named after Persephone, the Greek goddess and queen of the underworld. It can grow up to about 95 mm long. Maybe not such a mini beast after all!

The Grade 5 students have done a fantastic job of presenting to classes about the school bins. They have been really working hard on projecting their voices and speaking clearly. We have begun a study of how trees changed the environment on our planet and why we need them. Our first lesson was learning about the carbon cycle, and how human activity has increased the normal amount of carbon in the atmosphere contributing to global warming. Then we learned about how trees evolved from tiny moss-like plants eons ago. What an amazing journey!

Grade 6 have been working hard setting up their hothouses made from used plastic bottles. The tiny lettuce seeds have been planted and now comes the important work of remembering to water them. They learned about the different growth stages of lettuce, going from a sprout to a big juicy iceberg lettuce. We hope we can get them there!
