As modern citizens we can feel vulnerable to misinformation, scams, propaganda, conspiracy theories and fake news. The antidote to this is literacy. When we have strong literacy, we are better able to navigate through complex information, evaluate the credibility of sources, understand nuanced and technical language, and identify manipulative and misleading content. This, in turn, improves our potential for civic participation.

At Mount Alvernia College, we highly value literacy and critical thinking. One of the ways we draw attention to this as a whole school is through our Literacy Week celebrations. This is a week-long festival of events and publicity to highlight the importance and privilege of strong literacy.

We encourage all students to participate in the exciting program we have planned. We would also like to invite parents to ask questions about the program and encourage their daughter/s to participate in the events on offer. For extra impact, it would be especially wonderful if books and a love of reading featured in family life for the week.
