Academic Mentoring and Support Schedule 2026

Mount Alvernia College continues to support students by providing opportunities for students to seek additional help with their studies from Academic Mentors and staff during after school sessions. We encourage all students to use this valuable resource, and we thank all staff who volunteer their time.

This year Academic Mentoring runs every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons near the Futures Hub on Level 1. For Year 7 and 8, the session runs from 3:15pm to 4:30pm and for students in Years 9 to 12, the session runs from 3:15pm to 5pm.

Students are required to bring their own work, stay focused during sessions, and come prepared with specific questions or areas for improvement. Regular attendance is likely to result in better outcomes.

The schedule for this program, noting start and end times each term, is available in the MyMtA Academic Tile. Please note, the program will not run in the first or last week of each term. Neither will support be available on Public Holidays or gazetted pupil-free days.

Study Smarter, Not Harder: Your Guide to Exam Success

As we move towards the Exam Block period, now is the time to ensure that students are setting themselves up for success by preparing well for exams. Success in exams is not about last minute cramming or endless re-reading of notes. It is about using smarter strategies, managing your time well, and looking after your wellbeing.

Below are strategies which set students up for success.

Make Your Study Time Count

One of the most powerful ways to revise is through active recall. Instead of simply reading your notes, close your book and write down everything you remember about a topic. This is also known as “brain dumping”. This strengthens memory far more effectively than highlighting or re-reading.

It also pays to space out your revision. Research shows that studying in shorter sessions over time leads to better long-term retention than cramming everything in at once. Try breaking your revision into manageable 20 to 25-minute blocks, followed by short breaks to recharge.

Other strategies include:

  • Using flashcards or creating your own mini quizzes.
  • Practicing with past papers to get familiar with question styles under exam conditions. This includes timed practice.
  • Focusing on understanding key concepts rather than memorising facts.
  • Revisiting topics regularly as exams approach.

Most importantly, minimise distractions. Put your phone away, turn off notifications, and create a quiet study space where you can focus fully.

On Exam Day

Preparation is only half the battle. Your approach during the exam matters too.

  • Read the entire paper carefully before starting. Use perusal and planning time wisely.
  • Underline key words to ensure you understand what is being asked.
  • Allocate your time according to the marks available.
  • Start with questions you feel confident about to build momentum.
  • Attempt every question. It is an opportunity to earn valuable part marks.

If nerves kick in, pause and take some slow, deep breaths. Stay focused on your own progress and avoid comparing yourself to others in the room.

Look After Yourself

Your brain performs best when your body is well cared for.

  • Get enough sleep. Sleep is essential for memory consolidation and clear thinking.
  • Take regular breaks to avoid burnout.
  • Stay hydrated and eat nutritious meals to maintain energy levels.
  • Move your body. Even a 20-minute walk can boost focus and reduce stress.
  • Set aside time each day to do something you enjoy to support your wellbeing.

Exam success is not about studying longer. It is about studying smarter. With consistent effort, active revision techniques, good time management, and proper self-care, you will give yourself the best possible chance to perform at your best.

As we head into the second half of the term, I encourage all students to incorporate the strategies outlined above into their study routine. I wish all students the best for the remainder of the term.
