Year 4-6 Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to Ward who were crowned champions at our Year 4-6 swimming carnival at Norwood Pool last Friday!

In perfect conditions, we saw a record number of swimmers take to the pool. Our house captains and sports captains did a brilliant job in decorating their house tents. Show your true colours indeed! The students were in full voice from the first minute. The Houses had rehearsed several team cheers that they belted out with gusto.

There were some highlights early: Sophia R set a new record for the Year 5 50m butterfly, while Colette hung on for a narrow win in the 100m freestyle.

There were plenty of close finishes and lots of ribbons won. At the halfway mark of the carnival, we had Barry in front, Mulhall close behind in second, Ward hot on their heels in third and McGrath working hard in fourth. Everything would be decided by the freestyle events, kickboard race, novelty events and relays!

The lead changed several times in the frenetic final stages:

  • Ava S won a hotly contested kickboard race to nose Mulhall ahead
  • The Barry 4 x 50m medley relay team won an epic race to snatch it back
  • Mulhall’s Year 4 and Year 5 tyre relay teams won crucial back-to-back races before Ward claimed the Year 6 event

The 4 x 50m freestyle races are the final events on the program and it was great to see classmates and families in full voice as the teams raced down the pool. A strong finish by the Ward swimmers – 1st in the Year 5 relay and 2nd in the Year 6 relay was enough to see them home in one of the closest swimming carnivals we’ve seen.

Final Premiership table

1st: Ward (581 points)

2nd: Mulhall (568 points)

3rd: Barry (566 points)

4th: McGrath (420 points)

McGrath were the winners of the Spirit Cup for their amazing display of team support – songs, dances, chants, zinc, balloons, streamers… and red frogs aplenty!

Our Year Level Champions were presented with ribbons and medal by Ms Sexton for their incredible efforts:

Year 4

1st Ruby V B (Mulhall)

2nd Ivy D (Barry)

3rd Flora K (Mulhall)

Year 5

1st Sophia R (Ward)

2nd Helen C (Barry)

3rd tied Courtney R (Barry) and Chloe Z (Ward)

Year 6

1st Colette C (Barry)

2nd Imogen F (Mulhall)

3rd Evie H (McGrath)

Thank you to our Loreto staff for their assistance as lane marshals, time recorders, score keepers, award judges and photographers. Also to our Year 9 student leaders for timing, place judging and presenting ribbons – plus for jumping in the pool to help our tyre relay teams. Thank you to our Loreto families who came along to watch and contributed to such a fantastic atmosphere. Thanks so much to Ms Edwards for running the event so smoothly – the day barely missed a beat, even after a brief delay when she dropped the microphone in the pool.

Lastly thank you to every Loreto student who jumped in the water to represent their house and who cheered their team on from the side of the pool. We hope that you had a fun day!

The next swimming carnival on the junior school calendar is for our Year 2/3s on Friday March 6. Can Ward achieve a rare double?

Summer Netball

There are just two minor round matches to go in our summer season. We have had to dodge some hot weather over the summer but fingers crossed we can get on the court in the last two weeks. A few of our teams are in the frame for finals appearances; well done to Coach Megan and our Loreto Blue Year 7 team who knocked off the top team recently despite being two years younger than their opponents.

Cool Runnings

A large group of Year 3-6 runners started Term 1 with a 2km run to establish base-level times. In Week 2 coach Millie took our runners through some interval training. Well done to all the students who are giving cross country a go for the first time and congratulations to Emily who won our first 2km time trial!

We have several Cross Country events over the course of the year with the SAPSASA carnival and weekly SAAS competition in Term 2, plus the Catholic Schools carnival in Term 3.

Aces High

Our Loreto Blue tennis team started their term with a strong win over St Peters Girls on the Patch courts. Chloe, Elise and Eleanor put in a dazzling display and didn’t lose a set. On the junior school courts our Loreto Gold team had a narrow loss to Pulteney. Well done to Rianna who won her singles rubber and great work to Lisa, Ilaria and Myra who were playing their first ever matches. All three players won several points, improved their serving and were involved in some exciting rallies.

Junior School Aerobics

It has been great to see so many Year 4-6 students join in our aerobics sessions this term!

Ms Woods and her team of coaches have been putting the girls through their paces, showing them the routines and working through the choreography. Students are working hard and having fun. The teams have been finalised – no easy task with 68 junior school students! We look forward to our first competition next term!

Hot Shots

Well done to our basketball teams who started their seasons last Wednesday at the State Basketball Centre, Wayville.

Our very excited Year 3 team (Loreto Swish) were playing in their first ever game and fought hard against a strong Annesley team. Our players picked up the game quickly and improved throughout. Well done to Poppy and Lola who scored our first ever points! In Game 2 we doubled our points tally from 4 to 8. Let’s hope that this exponential growth continues!

The Year 4 team (Loreto Slam Dunkers) fell behind early against Goodwood but mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, led by some tight defence. With time fast running out we were down by one point. Cometh the moment… with the game on the line, up stepped Tatum with the match-winning basket! Loreto winners by 1!

Clutch moments: Michael Jordan was exceptionally efficient in clutch situations, with data indicating a 40% field goal rate on game-winning or tying shots in the final five seconds. In NBA Finals clutch situations, he shot 44% (47-107). His prowess led to speculation that there existed a “Clutch Gene” that allowed the very best players to perform efficiently even under extreme pressure.

Music at Loreto – Instrumental Lessons & Ensembles

Music continues to thrive at Loreto, and we are delighted to see so many students engaging in our instrumental and ensemble programs.

Instrumental Lessons

Learning a musical instrument offers a wide range of benefits for students. Beyond developing musical skill, instrumental study strengthens concentration, discipline, time management, and perseverance. It also nurtures creativity, builds confidence, and enhances cognitive development — skills that support learning across all subject areas. Most importantly, music provides a meaningful avenue for self-expression and joy.

If your daughter is interested in beginning instrumental lessons, we warmly encourage you to complete the registration form via the following link: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=rbfyUk7ceUmp_J8ONWcLaB3IQUyMcVlBgCBrzwJAi9BUMUcxWlVUVFVERlQyQ0FMU1JaRDBKNkVHTCQlQCN0PWcu&route=shorturl

Further information regarding instrumental lessons can be found on the Music page on Loreto Connect.

Ensembles

Our ensemble program is a wonderful way for students to connect, collaborate, and develop their musicianship in a supportive environment. We would love to see your daughter participate in the following ensembles this year, requiring no audition:

  • R-2 Training Choir - Mondays at lunchtime
  • 3-6 Junior Choir – Tuesdays at lunchtime
  • Senior Choir – Tuesdays at lunchtime
  • Junior Concert Band – Wednesdays after school
  • Senior Concert Band – Wednesdays after school (Will resume rehearsals at the beginning of Term 2 following Generations in Jazz)

We look forward to another vibrant term of music-making and encourage all students to consider becoming involved in our growing program.
