ADHD News for Victorians
In welcome news from the Victoria Government last month, GPs in Victoria will soon be able to diagnose and treat ADHD in both children and adults, slashing the wait times and costs that come with Paediatrician and Psychologist appointments for assessment, diagnosis and the prescription of medication.
The announcement brings Victoria into line with New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland. The governments of Tasmania and the ACT have also committed to reform ADHD care to make diagnosis and access to treatment easier, faster and less expensive for people.
The Royal Australian College of GP’s estimates up to 163,000 Victorian children and 320,000 adults may be living with ADHD. With the Victoria Governments support of $750,000 for training of 150 GPs across Victoria and a focus of training doctors in rural towns, your local Doctor may be able to diagnose and provide ongoing medication for ADHD from September this year.
Early intervention for children with ADHD is vital. It sets them up to thrive at school and at home. For adult patients, a diagnosis and access to treatment can be lifechanging.
