Year 4 Excursion to Ocean Grove Main Beach

On October 17th, our Year 4 students had an incredible day of outdoor learning at Ocean Grove Main Beach. The excursion provided a unique opportunity for students to explore the local environment while participating in activities designed to increase their understanding of coastal ecosystems and the importance of conservation.

The day’s activities were enriched by the expertise of local organisations, including Friends of Hooded Plover Bellarine, Ocean Grove Coastcare, and Barwon Coast. Their knowledge and passion brought the day to life and inspired our students to take an active role in caring for our environment.

A key focus of the excursion was the Hooded Plover, a critically endangered shorebird that nests along our beaches. Students learned about the challenges these birds face, such as habitat destruction, human disturbance, and predators. Through engaging discussions and hands-on activities, students explored how small actions—like observing signs and sticking to designated paths—can make a big difference in protecting these special birds.

Another favourite activity was beach combing, where students scoured the shoreline for natural and man-made items, from shells and driftwood to seaweed and marine debris. They learned how each item contributes to—or detracts from—the health of the coastal environment, gaining a new appreciation for their local beach.

Finally, students explored local biodiversity, identifying native plants, animals, and marine life. They were fascinated by the intricate balance of ecosystems and how every organism, from the smallest crab to the tallest dune vegetation, plays a vital role in maintaining a thriving environment.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Friends of Hooded Plover Bellarine, Ocean Grove Coastcare, and Barwon Coast for their time, effort, and expertise. This excursion would not have been possible without their support and commitment to environmental education.

The Year 4 students returned to school with new knowledge, a deeper connection to their local beach, and a renewed enthusiasm for protecting our environment. This hands-on experience has empowered them to become stewards of the coast and advocates for its preservation.

Celebrating Two-Star Sustainability at Ocean Grove Primary School

We are excited to announce that Ocean Grove Primary School has been awarded the Waste Star by Resource Smart Schools!

This recognition celebrates the dedication of our entire school community, with a special acknowledgment of our Sustainability Student Leaders for 2023: Hattie, Ada, and Quinn.

Throughout our journey, we have implemented a waste management strategy across classrooms, gardens, and office spaces. Students at all levels have learned and embedded the principles of recycling, upcycling, and reusing materials.

The introduction of 'Nude Food Tuesday' has been particularly successful, with students enthusiastically preparing waste-free lunches and encouraging their parents to minimise packaging.

What is the Resource Smart School Star Progression?

Stars are obtained through the completion of Modules and meeting benchmarks for resource use and is valid for four years.

Schools receive their first Star once their Core Module is certified by Sustainability Victoria. Schools can progress from 1 Star up to 5 Stars and move towards becoming a Leadership School. Each of the 5 Stars has specific requirements for completion. Schools must complete additional actions in the Modules and meet and maintain resource benchmarks.
