Miss Sophie Goodman

Please continue to read your home readers and tricky words every night.

This is extremely important for your child and their reading and writing progress.

We have had an extremely busy two weeks finishing off our procedure unit. Here are some photos of our procedures that we followed when making ice cream sundaes and slime!

Kindergarten are starting a new unit next week all about data. Students will be learning to contribute to collecting data and interpret data displays made from objects. Here are some tips that you can practise at home!

  • Together with your child, keep track of the time they spend watching TV or using their device. At the end of the week, see if you can make a simple display of each day of the week and the time spent using their device or watching TV.
  • Play games such as ‘paper, scissors, rock’ and record wins and losses.
  • With your child, read and collect information about their favourite sports teams. This could be their own weekend sport teams.
  • Collecting data together about something that you both find interesting. For example, what kinds of pets are most popular with your extended family or friends
  • Designing a simple data display from blocks, pegs or counters to represent the data gathered. For example, 5 blocks mean there are 5 dogs, 3 blocks for 3 cats, one block for a rabbit and 6 blocks for 6 birds
  • Asking questions to understand and make meaning from your data display. For example, What pet was the most popular? What pet was the least popular?

Year 1 students are beginning a new unit next week as well. They will be learning to measure, record, compare and estimate lengths and distances using uniform informal units, as well as metres and centimetres. Here are some tips for home!

  • Involve your child in reorganising furniture. Ask “Will this chair fit here?” “Do we have enough space here for your bed?”
  • Ask your child to help sort the washing and discuss the relative length of different items of clothing e.g. “I know these are Dad’s socks because they are longer than mine”.
  • Keep a growth chart and compare the heights of members of the family.
