As part of our continued focus on wellbeing, several members of the Pastoral Team have attended the Positive Schools annual conference. One of the keynote speakers, Dr Helen Street, presented on “contextual wellbeing”. The term “wellbeing” is often thrown around but what does it actually mean?
Dr Street has built on something called Self Determination Theory (SDT) and an understanding of the basic rights of every child. The premise is to have the tools to build an agreed view of wellbeing that is relatable, relevant and resonates with all. In other words, there is not one definition of wellbeing. It depends on many factors that reflect the organisation and people it strives to serve. It is “contextual”!
As a team we will review our learning from this conference and see what we can take forward into our daily practices and thinking. Our desire to keep improving and keep learning is one of the things I value most at St George’s.
On the subject of things I value at St George’s, this week I had the privilege of attending the Remembrance Day Service at St George’s Cathedral. Our 2025 Student Leaders were immaculately turned out and added to the solemn ceremony with the readings delivered by Rory Bingham, Sophia Warren and Fred Keane. Outside we listened to the Last Post before a perfectly observed minute’s silence. Although not from a military background, I have always found this ceremony very moving but this time it was mixed with a genuine sense of pride watching the wonderful contribution from our students.
On Wednesday evening this week we welcomed world-renowned cyber expert Susan McLean (pictured) who gave our parents an insight into the modern use of social media. Our parents and staff in attendance were most grateful to be awakened by Susan’s knowledge of social media as a professional and as a parent in the digital age. Our final Parent Guest Speaker Series for 2024 was a great success.
A final note from me is to remember to be kind to each other and ourselves.
As the end of the year approaches, we are all getting tired. This can lead to some thoughtless words and actions. Let’s finish the year strong so that we can all go away and have a happy and restful summer break.
