Romans 12:9-21 is one of the most empowering scriptures for me. Most Bibles call that section ‘Love in Action.’ For me, it empowers us to be the positive stimulus wherever we are. Some people and places can indeed trigger negative feelings and negative memories. Consequently, they negatively impact others. But we can decide to be those who are always seeking after doing what is good, keeping the spirits of others high, people who are always joyful, hopeful, patient, faithful, prayerful, hospitable, and all things good.
St Paul sums it all up in that powerful verse 18, which says, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone”. We have been doing this throughout the year here at St George’s Anglican Grammar School in chapel and classes. I have seen Year 12s filled with joy as they graduated last month. I saw hope in them as they prepared for their exams.
Their positive attitude helped stimulate the Year 11s who stepped up into their student leadership roles with so much enthusiasm. This week and next week Year 11s are away from school as they are also now writing their exams. Year 10s have since stepped up to fill the student leadership role as the leaders of our school. I am looking forward to the Year 10 student-led chapel on Monday, their excitement to do it is amazing. This is the spirit we have been cultivating and will continue to cultivate here at St George’s.
My experience is that young people do well when they have positive stimuli at home, school, and chapel. I encourage parents and guardians to chat with their children, to listen to their stories, and to share in their laughter and joy. Let us together do our best to be a positive stimulus for our young people.
