Around Our Level
In Literacy, we have been learning about the diagraphs ‘ck’ and ‘sh’ in CVC words. We have been undertaking one-on-one reading assessments, involving running records, testing letters/sounds, writing words and writing and listening to a dictated sentence. Students wrote a recount about their weekend and drew a picture in their books. Our teaching focus has been on capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
In Maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes, such as cylinders, cubes, cones, spheres and pyramids. We have also been learning about money and the different coins and notes. This week we move on to our new topic of ‘sharing’ equally. We read the story “The Bowerbird’ who collects different blue items and has to sort objects into groups. Once we created our different groups we had to add up and count how many items the Bowerbird had collected. We used the interactive dice on the TV to work out how many groups we had to make. The children worked with their shoulder partner and rolled another dice to see how many counters they needed to make 3 groups of 3. We used paper bags and cookies to share into equal groups.
In History, students have been undertaking their ‘Me in a Bag’ presentations to the class. Each child had to bring 5 items that were special to them in a bag and retold why their ‘artefacts’ were special to them. We have enjoyed listening to these in class and learning about the children’s hobbies and interests. These have included photos, family holidays, toys, and lots of other interesting items.
We would like to warmly welcome our new Prep student, Tilly C, who has settled in beautifully in Prep B and welcome her family to our school community.
Last week we had our very first Prep Transition session for 2025. Our new students enjoyed reading the story, ‘The Kissing Hand’, and making a racoon puppet to take home. They received their Yarra Road showbag filled with goodies, such as a drink bottle, a buddy bear and a special Yarra Road T-shirt. This Friday will be our second transition session where the new preps will be undertaking a PMP session in the gym.
Last Friday we celebrated our whole school ‘Colour Run Explosion’. It was so much fun. We were hosed down by the Wonga Park CFA and finished on the oval with an icy pole. A big thank you to our wonderful Parents Association for organising this fantastic event and raising close to $15,000 dollars, which is an incredible achievement. A special mention to Prep A for being the highest money raisers for the school. Congratulations to both Mrs Cooper and Mr Darby for being brave and having a bucket of ice tipped on them, and to all the other teachers that volunteered on the day. It was a huge success and there were lots of happy smiles on the day.
Students are nominated by their teachers to receive a certificate of acknowledgment. The below student's certificates will be presented at our next assembly.
