On Wednesday 13th November, the Kindergarten classes set off for an adventure to the Don Railway. We walked along the Don Reserve path playing eye spy in small groups and we spotted lots of exciting things like Blue Wrens and spiders, and we could see the train tracks too.
As we were arriving at the Dell Luck Reserve where we had planned our picnic, it started to rain but that did not dampen our mood! We huddled together in the picnic shelter and enjoyed some snacks and chats. Following that we headed over to the train station, standing under some trees for shelter along the way. We were all given train tickets and boarded the train.
We went for a leisurely ride in the rain driven by then one and only Thomas the Tank Engine. Some highlights included Thomas blowing off his steam, the walk through the bush and going on the train with friends. A special thank you to Mrs Barnard, the office staff and our wonderful parent helpers for making our excursion happen.
On Saturday 16th November, ten Year 5/6 students went to Penguin to compete in this year's LEGO League competition: Archer, Jasmine, Ruby Y, Tom, Evie, Ezra, Annabelle, April and Max K. Guided by Mr Cruse and Miss Shurley, we have been preparing for months in order to participate in this year's competition.
On Saturday, we all arrived at around 8:30am attired in our fabulous tutus to get into a cheerful spirit. The day began at 9:00am with an opening ceremony, where someone introduced all of the competing teams as they entered the room. Some introductions were done boringly and others enthusiastically. Activate DCS was one of the latter teams! After the opening ceremony finished we headed to an area reserved only for the teams and their coaches. We set up a station at our table for the other teams to participate in. We set up Blookets on a computer and a Lego claw machine to keep everyone entertained.
Our first round commenced at around 10:00am. We entered with cheerful and hopeful mind-sets, we cheered when something went right and reassured when something went wrong. In the end, we got 205 points - we were in the lead!
We had a small break to relax and enjoy ourselves in between the rounds. We did Just Dance, tried a VR headset and ate food. When the second round began, we came in with just as much enthusiasm as last time. In the end, we managed to get 195 points, but the scoring was based off our best score, so we still had 205 points and were still winning - by a lot!
Before our third round, we went into a judging area to present our innovation project. We had five minutes to present a project that will make exploring the sea easier. According to the judges we did well, with little stuttering and easy words to understand. After a few critiques, we went on to our third and final round.
We were feeling good considering that we were in second place. Innovate DCS, one of secondary teams, was the only team ahead of us. We tried our best and did one of the codes twice for a better shot and ended up scraping 200 points, leaving us in second place.
During the closing ceremony, we found out that we didn't make it to the nationals in Sydney. Everyone was disappointed, but we were happy with what we accomplished and are grateful for the experience.

Devonport Christian School is excited to gather as a community for our 2024 Kinder to Year 8 Celebration Service.
Our Celebration Service will be held at the paranaple centre, 6:30pm Wednesday 4th December. Market Square is available for families to bring a picnic and socialise from 5:00pm onwards. Doors to the paranaple centre will open at 6:10pm and students will need to be seated by 6:20pm.
Our Celebration Service is a wonderful evening where we have the opportunity to reflect on the past year, praise and worship God for His amazing goodness to our school and celebrate our students and staff. Students from Kinder, Prep, Year 3/4, Year 6 and selected Secondary students will perform on stage on the night, with other classes being featured in some amazing video presentations.
Tickets are now available through our online booking system.
To secure your tickets, please indicate on the online order form how many tickets you would like for your immediate family. This form will be the only way tickets can be secured. There is no cost for tickets, but as there is limited seating, a ticket will be required for entry to the paranaple centre. Families are able to reserve up to four tickets for the evening.
Please note - tickets are not required for current DCS staff and students.
Follow this link to access the form: Celebration Service Tickets
Should there be additional tickets available, we will inform DCS families on Monday 2nd December.
