Year 6 Market Day

Congratulations to the Year 6 students and Year 5’s in 5/6C for setting up such an amazing market! The rooms were buzzing with excited students coming in to make purchases from the stalls.

All proceeds raised will be donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

See further details below.

This term, the Year 6 students and Year 5’s in 5/6C, explored the big idea of ‘Where are we going?’

Students were given agency and chose to learn about their future in economics and finance. Throughout the Inquiry process, students discovered the best way to learn about economics is to immerse themselves in a realistic experience.

Students in groups, each contributed $5 to fund their start up mini business. They then spent time surveying younger students about their interests and what they may like to purchase. After collating their data, the students spent the following weeks, choosing an item to create and sell at the upcoming Craft Market.

Students unpacked the concept of a ‘budget’ and ordered materials to make their items. The students then spent many weeks working hard to hand make their amazing products such as, plush crochet toys, beaded jewellery, stress balls, painted rocks, lava lamps and pottery. They also investigated the amount of money they would need in order to make a profit on the day, which allowed the students to authentically decide on appropriate prices for their items.

Students also learnt about the concept of a ‘float’ which enabled them to successfully run a functioning market stall. So much thought went into every stall, with marketing concepts of advertisements and visual merchandising being considered throughout the whole experience. After the whole school was able to visit the amazing Craft Market, the Year 6 students spent time calculating their profit.

2:00pm – 2:30pmShort break
2:30pm – 3:30pmSession 5

This term we trialled a timetable with the lunch break being first and the recess break in the afternoon. A survey of 8 classes within our school last week indicated that this timetable was preferred by the majority of students, and they would like it to continue for 2025. Teachers also agreed with the students and Mary in the canteen said that she loved it!

Students' comments:

Benefits of the New Timetable

Benefits of the Original Timetable

  • More time to play early in the day
  • More fun when you have lunch first
  • I can eat my sandwiches earlier in case running late in the morning and haven’t had breakfast
  • Better if hot in the afternoon, big break first is better
  • Canteen is too busy at lunch so we have more time to buy in the first break
  • If it’s a hot day timetable and we have to stay inside, the lunch break is too long in the classroom
  • With recess first I was always hungry but now I am more full for the day. I have more energy
  • Easier to focus on our learning with the new break times
  • Playtime is easier - less arguments as we are less tired
  • I get to play more first

Canteen lines are longer at second break and it is harder with the break being shorter

  • Struggling with eating lunch at the earlier time - 2pm is late to eat lunch
  • More fun when you have a longer break 2nd
  • I like recess first in the winter because it’s too cold to be outside, but I like lunch first in summer because it’s too hot later in the day
  • Used to the old TT
  • Because I get hungrier since I've had my bigger meal early in the morning
  • Would rather eat a lunch-order in the morning over the afternoon
  • Not as hungry in the morning
  • Big lunch is too close to breakfast, would rather have a small snack
