Head of Sport Report
This weekend sees the second last round of summer sport for the year. Our teams across both basketball and touch football have had some good results which will stand them in good stead for the lead up to the finals when we return in Term 1 next year.
In Week 8 our First V boys are off to the Gold Coast for the Australian School Basketball Championships. After bringing home silver in 2023, we wish them well on their quest for gold!
Congratulations
Hockey
Congratulations this week goes to James Reynolds who has recently been selected in the NSW Indoor 18s Men’s Blues team for the upcoming National Indoor Hockey Championships in the summer holidays from the 6th-10th of January. This is once again a great achievement for James and we wish him well at Nationals.
Cricket
Charlie Monks has been busy scoring a lot of runs for Nepean Cricket. In Round 5 of the Cricket NSW Youth Championships Charlie ranked 4th in the top run scorers with 106 off 84 balls. As a result he was named the Nepean Cricket Player of the Week and also named in the Team of the Week for Nepean. Well done Charlie and all the best for the rest of the season.

Girls Basketball - Round 3
Firsts
74-26
The girls had a tough loss against Redlands.
We only had 7 players and had 3 fouled out in the last quarter. We need to be more disciplined not reaching on defence and giving away silly fouls and with our passes as we give the opposition too many extra scoring opportunities. But I’m proud of the girls so still trying their best and not giving up.
Open C
34-22
The girls had a good win against Redlands.
They did a good job of playing off the fast break and playing together as a team. We need to improve our passing as we turned the ball over too many times.
Our defence needs to be a lot more consistent we sometimes lose focus and lose track of our players and we need to do a better job of moving our feet to stay in front. Because of this we let the other team catch up towards the end of the game.
Junior A
The Junior Girls A recorded their first win of the year with a gutsy 36-33 win over Redlands. The girls played outstanding defence out rebounding the much taller opposition. The girls moved the ball efficiently in attack and as result scored many excellent baskets. All girls played well but special mention goes to Grace, Elise and Lilly who played particularly well.
Junior C
The Junior C girls maintained their undefeated record with a gutsy 40-5 win over Redlands. The win was even more meritorious due to the fact that there were only 5 girls available for the game. Congratulations to Hayley, Charlotte, Ruby, Maggie and Izzy for their outstanding game where they played with magnificently as a team with everyone scoring.
Boys Basketball
Firsts
The First Boys' Basketball Team played a challenging game against Oakhill College, leading from start to finish. While there were some great moments on both ends of the court, the team initially struggled to execute to their full potential, with fluctuating application of team principles. However, they rallied in the latter stages, increasing defensive pressure and sharpening their offensive execution to finish the game on a high note. The team secured a solid win and gained valuable insights to work on improving overall consistency moving forward.
17’s
The second boys' basketball team played a tough game against Oakhill, battling through the entire match with only five players. Although our defence was not the best early on, a timeout helped the team refocus and improve. From that point forward, they worked hard to adjust to Oakhill's press and strengthened their defensive efforts. The boys never gave up, showing determination and grit throughout. Their effort and resilience were impressive, and they should be proud of how they fought until the final whistle.
15’s
The 15 Boys started their game against Oakhill with a strong burst of scoring and tight defence, leading the game by 6 in the early stages. Oakhill then showed some of their shooting skills, as well as being very quick in transition, and gained a 10-point lead by halftime. Once we found ways to mitigate their transition offence, and got into our set defence, we held them to very few points, and our offence also found a spark to make the game competitive. Unfortunately, Oakhill held their lead to the end, but it was great to see the boys compete at the same level as one of the top teams in the competition, showing promises of more wins as the season goes.
14’s
The 14 Boys game against Oakhill was an extreme test of our defence, as we came up against a well-drilled team, with some much bigger and stronger athletes. Whilst we struggled to defend against their size and their actions, as well as being pressured bringing the ball up the court, the boys chose to never give up and played right to the very end of the game. Rather than focusing on the score line, we focused on ‘micro-wins’, and it was excellent to see the team get behind each other in pursuit of these. The score line reflected Oakhill’s dominance, however it didn’t reflect the effort the 14s put into the game, which was an effort they should be proud of.
13’s
BMGS 13s had a hard matchup this week against Oakhill Academy. The game started off even, with Grammar and Oakhill exchanging points in the first half. Oakhill took off late in the half to build a lead, with a combination of size and shooting. Grammar did well to keep up on the offensive end, but were ultimately overpowered on defense by some strong screens and three-point shooters, and came away with the loss.
Girls Basketball - Round 4
Firsts
Firsts - 71-17
The girls had a tough loss against Oakhill. We only had 6 players.
Oakhill came out hard and fast pressing from the beginning of the game. This made us play frazzled and turn over the ball by making bad passes. Oakhill has a strong group of players who shoot very consistently from the 3 point line so this made the game blow out very easily. The girls did a much better job of playing more disciplined in defence, by not reaching and giving away silly fouls. I am proud of the girls because they did not give up and still tried their best.
Open C
The Open C girls came up against a strong SACS Firsts team this weekend. While SACS took an early lead with a few adjustments during the course of the game the girls were able to show an improvement. In defence going back into a zone reduced the opportunities for SACS to score. Unfortunately, our offence let us down. Whilst we had a great deal of possession in our half we were unable to capitalise and finish off with baskets. This would have made for a much closer game. Remember girls that the more we practise the better we get!
Junior A
The Junior A Girls had an excellent game against Barker considering there were only 5 girls available for the game. The final score 31-11 was no indication of the effort put in by the girls. They out rebounded Barker and executed their offence positive manner. The girls are continuing to improve in each game they play. Congratulations to Lillian, Hannah, Grace, Zariah and Isabelle on an outstanding effort.
Junior C
The Junior C team had only 6 players this week with others out with injuries. The girls played quite a good half court mana-to-man but would benefit from ensuring they know who they are marking.
Offensively this team is always good and with some extra ball movement and looking for cutters they were able to score the majority of times down the court to take home another good win.
Boys Basketball
Firsts
The Firsts boys’ basketball team made a strong start against St Stanislaus’ College, setting the tone early with solid team offense and intense team defense. In the first quarter, they played with great intensity, executing well on both ends of the court. As the game progressed, the team worked through a variety of zone offenses against Stannies' defense, providing valuable opportunities to further develop their offensive plays. While there were moments when ball movement stalled, leading to a dip in scoring, the boys regrouped and showcased some excellent team offense throughout the game. The defensive intensity was notably stronger this week, though there is still room to improve consistency. Ultimately, the team played hard, fought until the final whistle, and secured a fantastic win. Well done to all the players for their effort and commitment!
17’s
The boys’ 17’s basketball team faced a tough challenge this week against St Stanislaus’ College, playing with only five players once again. Despite a slow start, the team regrouped after a timely timeout and began to play to their potential. There were some great offensive moments, including stronger rebounding and improved execution of team plays. While defensive intensity fluctuated due to fatigue, the boys showed solid commitment on that end of the court. With foul trouble leaving them with just four players for the final stretch, the team fought hard and finished the game strong. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, they came away with a loss. However, their determination and teamwork throughout the match showed real character, and there are plenty of positives to build on for future games.
15’s
The 15 Boys game at St Stanislaus was very similar to our other games – we got off to a slower start, letting them gain a lead of 10 or so, before really sinking our teeth into the game and making it competitive. We tried to put our newly-learned offence in place, but unfortunately they played a zone defence against us, which threw it off. The boys were excellent in trying to adapt the motions to suit a zone defence, and we started to see some real success with it. However, the opposition’s quick transition, as well as their size inside on the rebounds, helped them keep their lead until they came out victorious. Despite the loss, the boys did an amazing job installing a new offence, as well as adjusting their defence to slow down their scoring. An overall excellent game from the 15s!
14’s
For Round 4, we made the long trip out to St Stanislaus, where the 14 Boys came up against another fast, big and strong team. Their transition offense was excellent, and their defence forced a lot of tough shots that were heavily contested. We made some adjustments, such as sending certain people back on defence once we had taken a shot, as well as putting some structure in on offense, and the boys once again began competing at a much higher level than at the start of the game. Whilst it will go down as another tough loss, the effort and commitment these boys put in during the second half, after being on camp all week, was great to see.
13’s
BMGS 13s had another tough away game against St Stanislaus' in Bathurst. Learning from last week's game against Oakhill, the boys were more prepared to defense against coordinated offensive teams and through screens. Grammar were strong on the offensive end, but struggled to get ahead on the fast breaks to stop open layups, giving Stannies a lead. The boys did well to defend against a taller and experienced team, especially through foul trouble, but were ultimately unable to secure the win.
Girls Touch Football
Round 3 – 09/11
Juniors: The Juniors played at home this weekend against Redlands 8. The game showed that they had already made improvements within the week, as they played the way that I was coaching them and took on my feedback. Olivia scored our first try of the season and the girls were so excited. At the end of the game, we ended up losing 5 – 1, but the result didn’t reflect the effort that the girls put into the game.
Firsts: The Firsts played at home against Redlands 3 in a very tight and exciting game. The game was always changing leaders, but in the end, the girls went down 5 – 4. It was a very fast paced and skilful game, where I was very impressed with the girls because they put on touch football plays that we had been practicing in training to score some spectacular tries and awesome try-saving touches.
Round 4 – 16/11
Juniors: This weekend, the juniors travelled to the Central Coast to verse CCGS 8. They were versing top of the table, so we knew that it would be a challenge, but the girls were willing to give it their best effort and that’s exactly what they did. In the end, they ended up losing 10 – 1, but they were the first team to score against CCGS 8 this season and they continue to keep their head held high and started to take on my advice, like communicating to each other during defence and sliding to limit spaces for the other team to get through.
Firsts: The Firsts travelled to the Central Coast to verse CCGS 2. They only had 8 players, so 2 reserves, but every single player stepped up and played their absolute best. Couldn’t be prouder of the effort that the girls put in. It was a tight game, with us dominating defence for a good solid 20 minutes of the game, but unfortunately the lack of reserves caught up to them and their exhaustion from running hard for 30 minutes caught up to them and CCGS scored 2 late tries to gain the lead on us. In the end, going down 6 – 4. I believe that these girls have taken on everything that they have learnt in training over the past 2 seasons and are starting to successfully put it into their games. I also want to note that, despite being absolutely exhausted from their own game, all the girls stuck on the sideline, gave excellent advice to the juniors and cheered for them during their game. Which I believe was a massive influence in the junior’s result.
Juniors: Due to CCGS having two junior teams, the girls had to play a second game against CCGS 9. Despite being exhausted from their first game, all girls were energetic and ready to play. It was the strongest game that I have seen them play, ending in a 5 – 5 draw. The girls were running at full pace, playing as a team, encouraging each other and looking for the passes, resulting in some beautiful full field tries. The first 10 minutes, the girls were down 2 – 0, but took on my advice on how to make defending easier and changed the momentum of the game. The energy that the Firsts team was giving on the sideline, also showed as the girls played with all their might and put in that second effort. The proudest moment of the game for me, was when it was 5 – 5 and CCGS were on the attack for the last 5 minutes of the game, due to some referee calls going against us and some errors by us, but instead of dropping their heads, the girls defended so hard, with some diving touches being made to prevent the CCGS 9s getting the win.
