Science
Preps
In Prep we are comparing our observations and predictions with everyone in our class. Students completed popcorn experiments where students predicted what will happen when we add a piece of pop corn to each solution? (Water, water & baking soda, salt water, and a vinegar solutions.) Students made a hypothesis and then recorded their results.
We are very excited when our new pocket microscopes arrived and we used our Little Wonder Explorer to see how optics, biology, physics and chemistry work by looking at tiny objects up close.
Grades 1 & 2
Students have been learning to sort information into graphic organisers and tables. We used a design brief to plan our blubber mitt to test if we could use a variety of materials inside our mitt to keep our hand warm when it is put into an ice bucket. Blubber is an important for most marine animals such as whales and seals. Its helps provide insulation from cold ocean temperatures. We chose different materials and made our mitt and recorded our results on our design brief.
Grades 3 & 4
Students completed an analysis of their thumb and compare their results with others and reasoning for their findings. We compared our predictions from our results and showed and understanding that analysing is very important in science and helps us become more meticulous by inspecting and breaking down data to help us form conclusions.
We also explored our new pocket microscopes and they helped us see nature in a new way. We used our analytical skills to look at plant cells, tiny bugs, rocks etc and understood more about different living things and how they work. We learned that rocks are made up of two more more minerals.
Grades 5 & 6
Our Science as a Human Endeavour focus has revealed many inspiring presenters and Shark Tank judges. Students have shown confidence, public speaking skills and perseverance to convince a panel of sharks to back their ideas. Our ideas continue to amaze us and we have pondered, questioned and thought deeply about the varied innovations and inventions. We have learned about new medical devices, taps that make their own water cycle to provide us with endless water. Devices that can retrieve memories for people suffering from dementia and dozens more ideas. All students have taken pride in their hard work and achievements.
